ipMonitor cannot connect directly with a modem

Updated October 9, 2018

Overview

In certain scenarios, ipMonitor cannot communicate directly to the modem.

Environment

All ipMonitor versions

Cause

The modem does not support the full AT command set used by ipMonitor.

Resolution

Use the External Process Action with a third-party modem application instead of the built-in SMS-based actions. Also, consider using NotePager Pro, which is available from the NotePage website. (© 2018 NotePage, Inc, available at https://www.notepage.net, obtained on October 9, 2018)

After you install NotePager Pro on the ipMonitor system, configure the software.

  1. Open NotgePager Pro.
  2. Click Carriers > Add.
  3. Configure a carrier.
  4. Click Recipients > Add.
  5. Configure a recipient.
  6. Open ipMonitor.
  7. Click the Configuration tab and select Alert List.
  8. Click the alert you wish to add.
  9. Click Add Action > External Process.
  10. Configure the action using the following settings:
    • Executable name: npp.exe
    • Directory: c:\program files\notepager pro\
    • Startup Directory: c:\program files\notepager pro\
    • Send Failure Message: checked
    • Failure command line: [Recipient] [Sender] [Message]
where [Recipient] is the name of the recipient created via the NotePager pro GUI, [Sender] is the From name you would like to have appear (for example, ipMonitor), and [Message] is the actual message. You can use ipMonitor tokens here.
For example: John ipMonitor "Monitor: %monitorname% is in a %monitorstate% state. Last Result: %monitorstatus%."

If NotePager Pro is running as a trial version, add the /minimized switch at the beginning of the command line parameters to ignore the Trial splash screen.
