Migrate from ipMonitor 8 to a new system hosting ipMonitor 10

Overview

This article describes how to migrate your current ipMonitor 8 deployment to a new system that will host ipMonitor 10.

Environment

  • ipMonitor 8 (old system)
  • ipMonitor 10 (new system)

Details

Set up your ipMonitor 10 system

Verify that your new system meets all system requirements for an ipMonitor 10 installation.

See the ipMonitor Installation Guide for details. 

Copy the ipMonitor 8 program files to the new system

  1. Log in to the system hosting ipMonitor 8.
  2. Stop the ipMonitorSrv service.
  3. Log in to the new system that will host ipMonitor 10.
  4. On the ipMonitor 8 system, copy the ipMonitor8 directory located at C:\program files\ipMonitor8\ to a network share.
  5. On the ipMonitor 10 system, create the following directory structure:
    C:\\Program Files\SolarWinds
  6. Copy the ipMonitor8 directory from the network share to the SolarWinds directory.
  7. On the ipMonitor 10 system, rename the ipMonitor8 directory to:
    ipMonitor
  8. On the ipMonitor 8 system, start the ipMonitorSrv service.

Install ipMonitor 10 on the new system

  1. On the ipMonitor 10 system, navigate to:
    C:\\Program Files\SolarWinds\ipMonitor\config\cred
  2. In the cred directory, delete the following file:
    credentials.db
  3. Install ipMonitor 10 on top of the ipMonitor directory.
    The installation will default to:
    c:\program files\solarwinds\ipMonitor\

Migrate your credentials to the new system

  1. On the ipMonitor 8 system, log in to the ipMonitor 8 web interface.
  2. Click Automation > Maintenance Schedules > Recurring Internal Maintenance.
  3. In the Recurring Internal Maintenance window, verify that:
    • Archive ipMonitor Configuration is selected.
    • Credential is specified in the Backup Credential box.
  4. Click Backup Now.
  5. Copy the backup file to the ipMonitor 10 system.
  6. On the ipMonitor 10 system, navigate to:
    C:\\Program Files\SolarWinds\ipMonitor\
  7. Run the following program:
    ipmrestore.exe
  8. When prompted, point to the backup file and enter the password for the backup credential.
    ipMonitor is now migrated to your new system. 

Transfer your ipMonitor license to the new system

  1. On the ipMonitor 8 system, navigate to:
    C:\Program Files\ipMonitor8
  2. Run the following program:
    ipm8config.exe
  3. When prompted, select Software Licensing.
  4. Click Park License.
  5. Complete the wizard to park the license using the indirect method. 
    See Activate or park an ipMonitor v8 license for details.
  6. On the ipMonitor 10 system, navigate to:
    C:\\Program Files\SolarWinds\ipMonitor\
  7. Run the ipMonitor Configuration Utility.
    In the directory, double-click:
    ipmconfig.exe
  8. When prompted, click Software Licensing.
  9. Select Click here to license.
  10. Complete the wizard to license your new installation.
  11. On the ipMonitor 8 system, uninstall the ipMonitor 8 application.
    The migration is completed.
