WPM transaction runs slow when played back from Orion server.

Summary of issue Transaction is running slow when played back from Orion server. When we run the same transaction from the recorder on the Orion server or from any other browser on the Orion box it runs fine. Difference is significant. Transaction takes less than 5 seconds in recorder but is taking nearly 30 seconds when played as a transaction from a player on the Orion server.
Applied latest version or hotfixes (Yes/No)
Run Active Diagnostics (Yes/No)
Troubleshooting steps performed Tried different browsers. Disabled screen shot capture on transaction. Flushed cache wherever possible in browser. Verified SEUM users are local admin on the box. restarted services.

The root cause of the issue was:

  • The issue persists because the register key HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\DefaultConnectionSettings is not created until we log in to SEUM-Users account explicitly on the player machine and run IE to disable "Automatically detect settings" which will create missing register key which stores this setting.

The resolution was:
To disable "Automatically detect settings" in LAN IE settings for all SEUM-Users after login on their account EXPLICITLY and disabling the "Automatically detect settings" from IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connection tab -> LAN Settings dialog.

Here I add full instruction for the customer how to repeat all steps on a new machine.

All below steps should be performed on WPM player machine on which the client is facing the issue.
I) First of all, to proceed further we have recreated all SEUM-Users with a known password.
1. Stop SolarWinds WPM Playback Service and WPM Playback Proxy service.
2. Backup and open the config file SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.Service.exe.config in Notepad by default located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\SEUM\Player\ as Administrator".
3. Edit the tag <agentConfiguration /> by adding an attribute for workerUserPasswordOverride or edit value of this attribute, if it is already presented.
For example:

... other attributes ...
... other attributes ...

4. Remove the file, AgentSettings.dat – removing this file will also remove all configuration done by the Player settings tool. This file is located in "C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\SEUM\Data".
5. Open Run window from start and type compmgmt.msc and press Enter key.
6. In opened Computer Management window expand Local Users and Groups node and select Users node.
7. Click right mouse button on SEUM-User-1 and choose delete.
8. Delete other SEUM-Users as well.
9. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Users and select and delete all SUEM-Users-# folders (You might have to restart the machine before you be able to delete those folders).
10. Start SolarWinds WPM Playback Service and WPM Playback Proxy service.
11. WPM Playback Service should after few minutes recreate all SEUM-Users with the known password you set in step nr 3.
12. When all account will be recreated you can delete the known password from the attribute "workerUserPasswordOverride" from "agentConfiguration " tag in SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.Service.exe.config file (this step is optional and it is only for security manners).

II) Steps to add SEUM-Users to Administrators group.
1. Open Run window from start and type compmgmt.msc and press Enter key.
2. In opened Computer Management window expand Local Users and Groups node and select Users node.
3. Select SEUM-Users-1 and click right mouse button and choose Properties.
4. Select "Member of" tab.
5. Click Add button and add local Administrators group name for this user.
6. Press OK button and again OK button.
7. Repeat sequence for every SEUM-User.

III) Disable “Automatically detect settings” for all SEUM-Users
1. Stop SolarWinds WPM Playback Service and WPM Playback Proxy service.
2. Loop through all SEUM-Users accounts.
2.1. Log in explicitly as SEUM-User account into the player machine with the known password.
2.2. Start Internet Explorer application.
2.3. In IE click on Tools -> Interner Options.
2.4. Navigate to proxy setting and uncheck checkbox “Automatically detect settings” (Connections tab -> LAN settings).
2.5. Save changes.
2.6. Verify if settings in step 2.2 are set.
2.7. Repeat all steps starting from paragraph 2.1 for next SUEM-User.
3. When you finish restart the machine.
4. Observe in WebConsole if there are some differences in duration time.
