Domain Configuration tool for WPM fails and "The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist" message appears

Updated December 7, 2018

Overview

As described in the WPM Administrator Guide, you can use the WPM Domain Configuration tool (SolarWinds.SEUM.AgentDomainConfigurationTool) to configure domain accounts that the WPM Player uses to play back transactions.

This article describes how to fix an issue that occurs if the WPM Domain Configuration tool fails and this message appears:

The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist.

When you run the WPM Domain Configuration tool, the SolarWinds.SEUM.AgentDomainConfigurationTool tries to validate that the domain user account used to run the tool exists in the domain, as described here:

  1. SolarWinds.SEUM.AgentDomainConfigurationTool uses domain user account credentials (domain\username) to connect to Active Directory.
  2. A query is sent to Active Directory to check if the domain user account exists in Active Directory.
  3. SolarWinds.SEUM.AgentDomainConfigurationTool connects to the Orion Server (or perhaps an Additional Polling Engine, depending on the setup) to report the connection status.

If the query sent in step 2 cannot validate that a domain user account exists in Active Directory, the WPM Domain Configuration tool fails with the following message:

The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist.

Environment

  • WPM 2.0 and later
  • Windows environment with Active Directory

Cause

When SolarWinds.SEUM.AgentDomainConfigurationTool queries Active Directory to validate the existence of a domain account, the Active Directory configuration does not provide read access to the following OUs:

  • CN=Users
  • CN=Computers

If query results are null, SolarWinds.SEUM.AgentDomainConfigurationTool cannot validate the domain account and displays the following message appears:

The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist.

Resolution

  • Locate the domain account used to run the Domain Configuration tool.
  • Provide the account with read access to all Active Directory objects. If that option conflicts with your organization policies, provide read access to at least the default OUs, especially the following:
    • CN=Users
    • CN=Computers
