Cannot restart WPM Playback Player Proxy service in WPM 2.2.2

Updated July 5, 2018

Overview

This article describes how the WPM Playback Player Proxy service may fail to restart when installed on a remote machine due to missing DLL files. This issue occurred after an upgrade to WPM 2.2.2.

Environment

  • WPM Player location
  • Upgrading from WPM 2.2.1 to 2.2.2

Cause

Logs stored in C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Logs\SEUM reveal that two DLL files are missing, as shown in this example warning:

2018-06-07 09:48:45,466 [4] WARN SolarWinds.Orion.Common.Helpers.CryptoHelper - Unable to load SolarWinds.Orion.Security.dll from execution directory.

System.IO.FileNotFoundException: The system cannot find the file specified. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070002)

2018-06-07 09:48:45,466 [4] WARN SolarWinds.Orion.Common.Helpers.CryptoHelper - Trying to load SolarWinds.Orion.Security.dll from Orion install directory...

After the warning, another warning appears that includes an exception, as shown here:

WARN  SolarWinds.SEUM.Common.SEUMBusinessLayerProxy - An error occurred when connecting to the communication channel.
ERROR SolarWinds.SEUM.AgentProxy.Http.AgentLongPollResponder - Unexpected error occurred when processing AgentGuid in long poll request.

Resolution

This issue was resolved in WPM 2.2.2 Hotfix 1, included in the Orion Platform 2018.2 Hotfix bundle released on July 25, 2018. Install that hotfix to resolve this issue.

For new installations of WPM 2.2.2, the SolarWinds Orion Installer includes this hotfix and earlier Orion Platform 2018.2 hotfixes.

Alternatively, here is a workaround:

  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion on the main Orion server.
  2. To resolve the exception, copy SolarWinds.Orion.Channels.dll from the Orion server to the C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion directory on the machine that hosts the WPM Player.
  1. To eliminate the warning messages that appear, you can also copy SolarWinds.Orion.Security.dll from the Orion server to C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion on the machine that hosts the WPM Player.
  2. Open the Computer Management application on the machine that hosts the WPM Player.
  3. Double-click Services & Applications node
  4. Double-click Services.
  5. Right-click on SolarWinds WPM Playback Player Service and select Restart.
  6. Right-click on SolarWinds WPM Playback Player Proxy and select Restart if running.
