Avoid System.OutOfMemoryException in WPM Web Transaction Recorder by limiting file size to 1 MB

Updated December 18, 2018

Overview

A  “System.OutOfMemoryException” error may occur after creating a WPM transaction that involves upload a file over 1 MB. The WPM Recorder is a 32-bit process with limited virtual memory, some of which is used for runtime.

Environment

  • WPM 2.2.2 and WPM 2.2.3

Cause

The process of uploading large files overloads WPM's available memory, resulting in an Out of Memory exception when reviewing details for the related recording.

Detail

SolarWinds recommends limiting the size of files downloaded by recordings in WPM or by scripts in SAM to 1 MB. Larger files may cause Out of Memory exceptions, timeouts, and performance issue.

If necessary, you can create a group on the Manage Groups page to monitor the status of the web app that uploads files, along with a monitor to track the uploading of test files.

  • In WPM, create a transaction to monitor the web app that downloads files to the local drive during recordings. Limit file size to the recommended 1 MB.
  • In SAM, set up a PowerShell script monitor to run a script that tests the uploading of files that exceed 1 MB.

To learn more about creating groups, see the Orion Platform Administrator Guide.
