Restore FrontBase from a full backup

Note: If you wish to restore to an earlier state of the database, and do not wish to restore changes made since the backup, remove your /FrontBase4/TransactionLogs folder before performing the restore.

To restore a backup:

1. Identify a backup to restore from by listing the contents of /FrontBase4/Backups/whd.fb. The backup files are named according to the time they were created.

2. Stop the Web Help Desk – How to Start/Stop Web Help Desk Service.

3. Execute the following steps depending on the OS you are using:

Mac OS X:

a. Open the Terminal and change to user root:

        sudo su -

b. Stop the FrontBase service:

     /Library/WebHelpDesk/fb stop

c. Create the whd.fb Backup directory (if not present):

      mkdir -p /Library/WebHelpDesk/FrontBase4/Backups/whd.fb

d. Copy the backup file to the whd.fb folder created in Step c.

e. Execute the following command:

      /Library/WebHelpDesk/FrontBase4/bin/FrontBase -create -restore=backup_filename whd &

 

Windows:

a. Stop the FrontBase service.

b. Create the whd.fb Backup directory (if not present):

      mkdir C:\Program Files\WebHelpDesk\FrontBase4\Backups\whd.fb

c. Copy the backup file to the whd.fb folder created in Step b.

d. In the Command Line, change directory to <C:\Program Files\WebHelpDesk>

e. Run FrontBase4\bin\FrontBase.exe -console -create -restore=backup_filename whd

f. Restart the FrontBase service.

Notes:

  • backup_filename is the backup filename you identified in the /Library/WebHelpDesk/FrontBase4/Backups/whd.fb/ folder that is usually in the format of B_YYYY_MM_DD-HH_MM_SS.
  • After restoring, Windows may show an error that FrontBase stopped running. If so, go to Services and start the Web Help Desk Embedded Database service again.
