How to run WHD and Apache Tomcat on port 80

Overview

If you need Apache Tomcat to run on port 80, you can configure it to proxy requests to Web Help Desk on port 8081. This will make it appear as if he application is running on port 80.

Environment

  • All Web Help Desk versions

Steps

  1. Stop the Apache server.
  2. Log in to the Web Help Desk server as an administrator.
  3. Navigate to the WebHelpDesk directory.
    Apple® OS X: /Library/WebHelpDesk    
    Microsoft® Windows®: \Program Files\WebHelpDesk    
    Red Hat®/CentOS™/Fedora Linux: /usr/local/webhelpdesk
  4. Open the /conf directory. 
  5. Open the whd.conf file in a text editor (such as Notepad).
  6. Leave the DEFAULT_PORT value set to 8081.
  7. Set the URL_DEFAULT_PORT value to 80.
  8. Save and close the file.
  9. Log on to your Apache server using an SSH or telnet client.
  10. Enable the mod_proxy module in your Apache Tomcat installation.

  11. Locate the Apache httpd.conf configuration file.
    This file is typically located at /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf.

  12. Add the following lines at the end of your httpd.confApache configuration file.
    ProxyPass /helpdesk http://localhost:8081/helpdesk
    ProxyPassReverse /helpdesk http://localhost:8081/helpdesk
  13. Start the Apache server.
