Issue:

Web Help Desk (WHD) may crash and become inaccessible and display an HTTP Status 500 error in the browser.

Cause:

This type of error is related to kernel configuration. The error occurs only on Linux systems, to prevent an application from opening too many file handlers and slowing the system.

Solution:

To resolve this issue:

  1. Run following command:

    ulimit -n

    The resulting number will probably be 1024. This number should be at least doubled.

  2. Assuming the resulting number is 1024, double the number of allowable file handlers by adding the following to the /etc/security/limits.conf file:

    *           hard    nofile      2048
    *           soft     nofile      2048
    root      hard    nofile    10240
    root      soft     nofile      4096

  3. Check another file number using the command:

    sudo cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max

  4. If the resulting number is around 60,000, increase that number by adding the following line to the /etc/sysctl.conf file:

    fs.file-max = 200000
