Error message when saving a tech note

Issue

When you create a tech note in the Ticket Details tab, Web Help Desk generates an error message. This issue applies to Web Help Desk configurations using an external MySQL database.

Cause

Your tech note exceeds the default maximum file size for your MySQL database.

Resolution

Adjust your MySQL database default file size to a setting that best fits your needs.

The MySQL database can be set to one of three maximum text file size settings:

  • TEXT - 65KB (Default)
  • MEDIUMTEXT - 16MB
  • LONGTEXT - 4GB

To change your maximum text file size setting, open the MySQL command line tool and execute the appropriate command for your desired file size.

Change the default text size to 16MB

  1. Open the MySQL command line tool.
  2. At the command prompt, execute:
ALTER TABLE TECH_NOTE MODIFY NOTE_TEXT MEDIUMTEXT
The default text file size is set to 16MB.
  3. Close the MySQL command line tool.

Change the default text size to 4GB

  1. Open the MySQL command line tool.
  2. At the command prompt, execute:
ALTER TABLE TECH_NOTE MODIFY NOTE_TEXT LONGTEXT
The default text file size is set to 4GB.
  3. Close the MySQL command line tool.

Change the default text size back to 65KB

  1. Open the MySQL command line tool.
  2. At the command prompt, execute:
ALTER TABLE TECH_NOTE MODIFY NOTE_TEXT TEXT
The default text file size is now set to 65KB.
  3. Close the MySQL command line tool.
