Enable access logging

Updated December 5, 2016

Overview

This article documents how to enable tomcat access logging.

Environment

All WHD versions

Steps

  1. By default, access logging is turned off. To enable it, you will need to uncomment the following tag in \Program Files\WebHelpDesk\conf\tomcat_server_template.xml (near line 267):
    className="org.apache.catalina.valves.AccessLogValve"
       directory="../../log"
       prefix="localhost_access_log."
       suffix=".txt"
       pattern="common"
       resolveHosts="false"
    />

    Note that the directory should be "../../log" -- you may need to change what is currently provided. Also, if you would like additional detail, set the pattern to "combined" instead of "common." This will generate logs in a format that can be read by charting utilities like awstats.
  2. After restarting the application, you should see an access log called "localhost_access_log.txt" in \Program Files\WebHelpDesk\log.

Note: tomcat_server_template.xml may be overwritten when updating to newer versions of the Web Help Desk. In that case, you will need to re-apply this change.
