Add disk for backups to the appliance

Table of contents

Updated March 10, 2017

Overview

Add an extra space to WHD Appliance for storing backups. Already added the disk to the VM in VSphere client and now the disk has to be prepared for WHD use.

Environment

WHD 12.4.1 Appliance

Steps

  1. Check the disk name which has been added. For example, if this is the third disk added to the Appliance, it will be labeled as /dev/sdc (/dev/sda bing /root partition, /dev/sdb - /data1).
  2. Create a partition to the new drive using the cfdisk /dev/sdc command.
  3. Partition name should be /dev/sdc1. Click Write to save changes and press ESC to quit.
  4. Format the new disk using the mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc1 -L "backup"  command (make no mistake in the partition path as this may result in data loss).
  5. Create a mountpoint for new partition using the mkdir /mnt/backup command.
  6. Edit the /etc/fstab file to mount disk on boot time using the vi /etc/fstab command (to find out more about fstab syntax use man fstab).
  7. Mount the drive using the mount -a command.
  8. Configure backup in WHD Web Console to use /mnt/backup (no restart required).
