Discovering your network

SolarWinds VoIP and Network Quality Manager provides the easy‑to‑use Network Sonar Wizard to direct you in the discovery of devices on your network. Before using the Network Sonar Wizard, consider the following points about network discovery:

  • Discovery does not add devices that are already in your database. Network Sonar recognizes and adds only new network devices.
  • The community strings you provide in the Network Sonar Wizard are only used for SNMP GET requests, so read‑only strings are sufficient.

To begin discovering your network:

  1. If the discovery wizard does not start automatically after configuration, click Settings > All Settings > Discover Network, and click Start.
  2. To discover devices located on your network, complete the following procedure.

    You can choose to discover devices based on IP ranges, subnets, IP addresses and information from Active Directory Only one selection method can be used per defined discovery. In this example, IP ranges are used for discovery. For information about the different discovery methods, see Network Discovery using the Network Sonar Wizard.

    1. Go to IP Ranges on the Network Selection page, and click Add Range.

    2. For each IP range, specify both a Start address and an End address.
    3. Click Add Range to add more IP address ranges.
      Click X to delete an incorrect IP address range.
    4. If you have added all the IP ranges you want to poll, click Next.
  3. To check the nodes polling with agents for updates, select Check all existing nodes, and click Next. For more information, see Using the Network Sonar Wizard to check agent polled nodes.
  4. If the devices on your network do not require community strings other than the default strings public and private, click Next.

  5. If any of your network devices require community strings other than public and private or if you want to use an SNMPv3 credential, complete the following steps to add the required SNMP credential.

    Repeat the procedure in this step for each new community string you want to add. When you have added all your community strings, you can highlight them, and then move them up or down in the list by using the arrows. To speed up discovery, move the most commonly used community strings on your network to the top of the list.

    1. Click Add New Credential.
    2. Select the SNMP Version of your new credential.
    3. If you are adding an SNMPv1 or SNMPv2c credential, provide the new SNMP Community String, and click Add.
    4. If you are adding an SNMPv3 credential, provide the following information for the new credential:
      • User Name
      • Context
      • Authentication Method and Password/Key
      • Privacy/Encryption Method and Password/Key

    5. Click Add, and click Next.
  6. To discover WMI-enabled Windows devices, complete the following steps:
    1. Click Add New Credential.
    2. Choose <New credential>, and provide a Credential Name, User Name, and Password.
    3. Confirm the password, and click Add.
    4. Click Next on the Windows Credentials view.
  7. On the Monitoring Settings tab, specify whether you want to include devices or nodes that only respond to ICMP, specify your preferred polling method, and click Next.

    By default, Network Sonar uses ICMP ping requests to locate devices. Most information about monitored network objects is obtained using either SNMP queries or, in the case of some Windows devices, WMI queries.

  8. Configure the options on the Discovery Settings view, and click Next.

  9. If you want the discovery you are currently defining to run on a regular schedule, select Daily or Advanced as the discovery Frequency, as shown in the following steps:
    1. To define a custom discovery schedule to perform the currently defined discovery repeatedly in the future, select Advanced, click Add frequency, and then provide the frequency for the discovery.
    2. To run the scheduled discovery daily, select Daily, and then provide the time at which you want your discovery to run every day, using the format HH:MM AM/PM.  

      • Scheduled discovery profiles should not use IP address ranges that include nodes with dynamically assigned IP addresses (DHCP).
      • Default Discovery Scheduling settings execute a single discovery of your network that starts immediately once you click Discover.
      • Results of scheduled discoveries are maintained on the Scheduled Discovery Results tab of Network Discovery.
         
  10. Click Discover to start your network discovery.

    Because some devices may serve as both routers and switches, the total number of Nodes Discovered may be less than the sum of reported Routers Discovered plus reported Switches Discovered.
