VoIP and Network Quality Manager 4.4 Release Notes

Last updated: March 14, 2017

These release notes for VNQM 4.4 describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in this release. They also provide information about upgrades and describe work-arounds for known issues.

For VNQM environment requirements, see VNQM 4.4 Recommended System Requirements.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements VNQM offers in this release, or compare VNQM 4.4 with previous releases of VNQM.

VNQM 4.4 is an Orion Platform product, and it runs on Orion Platform 2017.1.

Brand new look and feel

The first thing you’ll notice about this release is that the SolarWinds Orion Platform user interface is more modern-looking. The main menu bar on the top of  every page has been reorganized to make navigation faster and easier, and to save space so there’s more room for data. We've also condensed the Notifications into a drop-down located in the upper-right corner.

Cisco Unified Call Manager

VNQM now supports version 11.x of the Cisco® Unified Call Manager.

Web-based reporting

Create and edit reports using VNQM data in the Orion Web Console. You can recreate reports from the previously available Report Writer directly in the web-based Reporting feature in the Orion Web Console. Access the feature by clicking Reports > All Reports. For more information, see the VNQM Administrator Guide.

Web-based Alert Manager

Managing alerts is no longer available through the Alert Manager application. The deprecated application has been removed from the Orion Platform. Use the web-based Alert Manager through the Orion Web Console to create and manage alerts.

Avaya Aura

VNQM now supports version 6.3.x of the Avaya Aura® Communication Manager.

Native SSL support for the Orion Web Console

Seamlessly bind SSL certificates to the Orion Web Console and enable HTTPS connections using the Configuration Wizard. The Configuration Wizard scans the Orion server for valid SSL certificates that you can choose for the binding, or you can generate a self-signed certificate on the fly.

Other improvements

  • Use the Critical node status to trigger an alert or filter data in a report.
  • Set a custom node status to Critical or Warning using an alert action.
  • Use the Web-based SSH client when FIPS is enabled.

New customer installation

For information about installing VNQM 4.4, see the VNQM Installation Guide.

Before you upgrade!

If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following considerations:

  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.
  • Check your port requirements between versions. RabbitMQ messaging was added, and the new ports may show up in a port scanner.
  • After VNQM 4.4, future releases will no longer support Windows OS 2008 and 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. VNQM 4.4 currently supports these versions. SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade to Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, or 2016 at your earliest convenience. For more information, see End of support notices.

  • When upgrading to VNQM 4.4, if you added a site binding to a host name before you upgrade, you must bind the Orion Web Console to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). See this article.

  • When upgrading to VNQM 4.4 with custom menus, you cannot see the Performance Dashboard link in the menu. For details, see this article.

  • Within VNQM 4.4, the Alert Manager application has been deprecated and removed. Please use the web-based Alert Manager through the Orion Web Console to create and manage alerts. For more information, see End of support notices.

  • When upgrading on the Additional Poller, you may receive this error " The license we have for Orion Scalability Engine is outdated". See this article for details to resolve.

  • For more information about upgrading SolarWinds VNQM, see the VNQM Upgrade Guide.

How to upgrade

If you are upgrading from a previous version, use the following resources to plan and implement your upgrade:

  • Use the Product Upgrade Advisor to determine your upgrade path. Based on your current environment and versions, the Product Upgrade Advisor provides an ordered list of how to proceed with the upgrade.
  • If you are upgrading:
  • When you are ready, download the upgrade package from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.

TLS 1.2 support on Additional Polling Engines and Additional Websites

Issue: Cannot install Additional Polling Engines (APE) or Additional Websites (AWS) when the main polling engine uses TLS 1.2.

Work-around: Revert the main polling engine to an earlier version of TLS to install the APE or AWS. Once the APE or AWS is fully installed, you can re-disable SSLv3, TLS 1.0, and TLS 1.1 on your main polling engine.
