Virtualization Manager primary and secondary licenses

Updated: 12-29-2017

VMAN has two licenses: a primary license and a secondary license. (Why does VMAN have a primary and a secondary license?)

When to use the primary and secondary licenses for VMAN

For new installations of VMAN 8.0 and later

  • After installing VMAN with the Orion Installer, enter the primary license into the web-based license manager to activate VMAN in the Orion Platform.
  • You do not need to use the secondary license.

For legacy installations using the VMAN appliance (without integrating with the Orion Platform)

New installations of VMAN 8.0 and later do not need the VMAN appliance. See the VMAN Install Guide.

  • After installing the VMAN appliance, use the primary license to activate the VMAN appliance. Use the appliance's license management page.
  • You do not need to use the secondary license unless you want to integrate the appliance with the Orion Platform (see the next section). Keep in mind that you need to integrate the appliance with the Orion Platform to be able to use newer VMAN features like Recommendations.

If you want to integrate a legacy VMAN appliance with the Orion Platform

  • After installing VMAN with the Orion Installer, use the primary license to activate VMAN in the Orion Platform (also known as Virtual Infrastructure or VIM). Enter the primary license into the web-based license manager to activate VMAN in the Orion Platform.
  • After installing the VMAN appliance, use the secondary license to activate the VMAN appliance. Use the appliance's license management page.

Note: The primary license must be activated before the secondary license. Enter the primary license in the Orion Platform's license manager, then enter the secondary license in the VMAN appliance's license management page.

See the VMAN 7.2 Installation Guide for more information about legacy VMAN appliance installations and integrating the appliance with the Orion Platform.

Why does VMAN have a primary and a secondary license?

VMAN has a primary and a secondary license so that they can be used together to integrate the legacy VMAN appliance with the Orion Platform.

Note: The secondary license won't work without the primary license. This means:

  • The primary license and secondary license always work together to integrate a legacy VMAN appliance with an Orion Platform installation.
  • The primary license must always be used first. The secondary license cannot be used until after the primary license is activated.
  • The secondary license does not give you double the amount of sockets. You cannot use each license separately on two different VMAN installations to gain sockets for monitoring twice the amount of virtual systems.
