Issue

It is not possible to upgrade Virtualization Manager if the original VMware Tools were installed on the virtual appliance.

Cause

The earlier VMware Tools installation interferes with the installation of Virtualization Manager upgrades, and the upgrade procedure fails. In order to perform the upgrade, VMware Tools must be removed.

Resolution

Note: It is recommended that you make a snapshot before proceeding with the following steps.

  1. Log in to the appliance through SSH.
  2. Uninstall VMware Tools. In case of a tar installation, run the sudo vmware-uninstall-tools.pl command. In case of an RPM installation, run the sudo rpm -e VMwareTools command.
  3. Because of the previous installation of Open VM Tools, some directories are not removed when the VMware Tools suite is uninstalled. Remove these directories manually.

Warning: Enter the following commands with care. A mistake could have catastrophic consequences for the appliance.

    • sudo rm -rf /usr/lib/vmware-tools/
    • sudo rm -rf /etc/vmware-tools/
  4. Navigate to the admin console, and then perform the upgrade of Virtualization Manager.
