Install a federated collector to split data collection tasks between remote servers

  1. Extract the contents of the Collector .zip archive file.
  2. In the VMware client, deploy the new federated collector appliance from the OVF template the same way you deploy a SolarWinds Virtualization Manager server. See Install Virtualization Manager on VMware vSphere 5.1 or later.
  3. Open the console for the federated collector, and start the virtual appliance.
  4. Configure the network settings the same way you configure a SolarWinds Virtualization Manager server.
  5. Log in to the administration website of the collector (https://ip_Address:5480) with the user admin and the password admin.
  6. Click SolarWinds Data Collector, and in the Collector Timezone field, select the time zone of the main SolarWinds Virtualization Manager.

Do not set this to the time zone of the collector.

  7. Specify the host name of the collector.
  8. In the Collector Display Name field, enter a unique identifier.
  9. In the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Server Address field, enter the host name or IP address of SolarWinds Virtualization Manager.
  10. Click Configure Now.

The federated collector is ready to accept data source collection assignments from SolarWinds Virtualization Manager.

Upgrade a federated collector

Upgrading to the latest version of Virtualization Manager upgrades the Virtualization Manager software on both the master virtual appliance and on federated collectors. The upgrade also raises the CentOS version on the master appliance, but you must manually upgrade CentOS on federated collectors using the .ISO file.

If the federated collector is not updated automatically from the master appliance through port 443, enable communication over port 80 for a limited period of time. The upgrade checker runs hourly by default, and the collectors will upgrade automatically during this period.
