Solarwinds & Cisco Live! Barcelona
Join us from the 29th of January to the 2nd of February at Cisco Live 2018 in Barcelona, where we will continue to show how monitoring the network with SolarWinds will keep you ahead of the game. At our booth (WEP 1A), we will demonstrate how SolarWinds network solutions can help. As a bonus, we are also hosting a pre-event webinar - Blame the Network, Hybrid IT Edition with our SolarWinds Head Geek™, Patrick Hubbard on January 24th - GMT (UTC+0): 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. There's still time to RSVP.

Home > Success Center > Virtualization Manager (VMAN) > VMAN 8.1 Administrator Guide > Plan and forecast the capacity requirements of the virtual environment > Customize capacity planning calculations

Customize capacity planning calculations

To configure the details of the capacity planning calculations, click Advanced options in the capacity planning module.

Configure the calculation settings of capacity plans

In Advanced options > Calculation Settings, you can modify the way capacity plans are calculated. Settings you can define include:

  • Memory Wastage
Spare memory due to non-uniform VM resource requirements.
  • Memory Over-subscription
The amount of memory over-subscription as configured in the VMware Virtual Center.
  • Sizing Target
Defines how the CPU, memory, and disk space utilization values are used in calculations.
    • Peak
Calculates based on the peak resource utilization.
    • 95th Percentile
Ignores the peaks, and calculates based on the 95th percentile of resource utilization.
    • 75th Percentile
Ignores the peaks and high spots, and calculates based on the 75th percentile of resource utilization.
  • Reserved/Additional hosts
    • Failover Capacity
    • Number to add
Performs calculations considering more host resources than are currently used. For more details, see Simulate adding more resources to the virtual environment.
    • CPU (count)
The number of CPUs per host.
    • x Speed (MHz)
      The speed of each CPU
    • Memory (GB)
      Memory per host.
    • Shared Disk (GB)
      Shared disk space per host.
    • Disk I/O (IOPS)
The IOPS measurement of the disk.
    • Net I/O (Mbps)

To make the new settings take effect, click Update.

Configure warning and outage thresholds

In Advanced options > Resource Types, you can configure the warning and outage level thresholds for each resource type.

To make the new settings take effect, click Update.

Configure additional workload on the environment

In Advanced options > Workload, you can define a theoretical set of new VMs and check if your current resources can support it.

To make the new settings take effect, click Update.

Configure the sample period used in resource load calculations

In Advanced options > Sample Period, you can specify the performance data to use for calculating the load on a resource container. By default, the average daily performance data of the last 30 days is used, but this setting can be modified.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Specify the daily interval when you want to collect performance data.
  3. Specify the days of the week when you want to collect performance data.
  4. Click Update to save your changes.

The settings you specify are saved in the resource container.
