Virtualization Manager 6.3.2 Release Notes

Last updated: 6/7/2016

These release notes describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in this release. They also provide information about upgrades and describe work-arounds for known issues.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements VMAN and VIM offer in this release.

VIM Web Console - Brand new look and feel

The first thing you’ll notice about this release is that the SolarWinds Orion Platform user interface is more modern-looking. The main menu bar on the top of  every page has been reorganized to make navigation faster and easier, and to save space so there’s more room for data. We've also condensed the Notifications into a drop-down located in the upper-right corner.

ServiceNow integration

You can now integrate SolarWinds Orion Platform products with the ServiceNow, Inc. incident management system. With this integration you can:

  • Automatically create incidents in ServiceNow based on alerts that trigger in your SolarWinds Orion products

  • Synchronize the acknowledgement of SolarWinds alerts and ServiceNow incidents.

  • Update, close, and reopen ServiceNow incidents.

More powerful and easier-to-use discovery

As part of the new discovery, you can add an Active Directory (AD) Controller and then select the Organizational Units (OUs) you want to scan. Using AD for discovery is particularly useful for adding large subnets because SolarWinds Orion products can communicate directly with the devices instead of scanning every IP address.

Automatic Monitoring imports discovered devices, such as nodes, interfaces, or volumes, based on the monitoring settings you define. This means you don't have to go through the discovery import wizard after each discovery. Anything new will be monitored automatically.

Other improvements

  • The Virtualization Manager Appliance now uses Java version 8u92. For information about the content of this Java release, see the Oracle website.
  • Sample jobs now contain VMDatastore statistics for VMware, and the consumed and provisioned space is displayed in the Virtualization Manager Appliance.
  • New counters added in the Virtualization Manager Appliance, which provide more data about entities in VMware environments:
    • vm.cpuLatency
    • vm.cpuDemandMhz
    • vm.cpuMaxLimited
    • vm.cpuSwapWait
    • host.memoryPagesSwapRate
    • host.cpuLatency
  • Improved disk resizing in the Virtualization Manager Appliance that considers the GUID Partition Table's secondary partition.
  • Improvements in the Virtualization Manager Appliance designed to make the configuration and polling of large virtual environments easier, including improvements in the speed of data processing.
  • Various security improvements, including improved cipher security in the Virtualization Manager Appliance.
  • Basic support for VMware Virtual Volumes in the Virtualization Manager Appliance.

New customer installation

For information about installing Virtualization Manager, see the Virtualization Manager Installation Guide.

Before you upgrade!

If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following considerations:

  • When upgrading to VMan 6.3.2 on the same server with DPA installed, the DPAO piece causes issues with alerting
  • Orion Platform 2016.1 no longer supports OS Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, 2008, 2008 SP2, and 2008 R2 without SP1.
  • If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.
  • If you have edited resource properties, the All Groups resource may be empty after upgrading to VIM 2.1.2 (for VMan 6.3.2). This is a known issue for Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
  • When upgrading to VIM 2.1.2 (for VMan 6.3.2), using the group by feature for custom properties may return no results, and the data loading may hang or not complete. All regular functionality is unaffected by the issue. This is a known issue for Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
  • Always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • Be aware that due to changes in group limitations in the Orion Platform, there was a change in the behavior of  group limitations applied on virtualization entities. The new behavior is more restrictive than the previous one.

If there are entities of different types in one group (Clusters, Hosts, VMs), their hierarchy is taken into consideration. This means that, for example, hosts will be visible if they are not restricted by the parent cluster, and the same applies for VMs and their parent hosts. The visible subset of the environment depends on an intersection of limitations applied on different virtualization entity types.

Consider the new default behavior when you configure group limitations in Orion.

How to upgrade

Use the following resources for planning and upgrading:

Fixed issues

Virtualization Manager 6.3.2 and VIM 2.1.2 fix the following issues.

Orion Host Identity matching works correctly even in cases where the host_name is incorrectly stored with a trailing dot when the domain name is an empty string.

955905

Users using LDAP authentication can log in to the Virtualization Manager appliance even if they are already logged in to Orion.
