License management with primary and secondary licenses in Virtualization Manager version 6.2

Updated: 5-22-2016

Overview

In Virtualization Manager version 6.2 and later, the license you have to apply consists of two parts: a primary and a secondary license. The difference between the two licenses is the following:

  • The primary license key is installed on the VMAN appliance.
  • The secondary license key is installed on the SolarWinds Orion server for stand-alone VMAN with VIM installed.
  • The secondary license is not used if you integrate the VMAN appliance into an existing Orion Platform (such as NPM, SAM, SRM, etc).

VMAN comes with a stand-alone version of the Orion Platform.

  • For VMAN 6.2 through 6.3.2, this product is called Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor (IVIM).
  • For VMAN 7.0 and later, this is called Virtual Infrastructure Monitor (VIM).

Important: If you integrate VMAN with an existing Orion Platform, check the IVIM or VIM version in the footer. You may need to also install the included copy with VMAN to add and update features used by the VMAN appliance.

You can integrate one Virtualization Manager with one SolarWinds Orion server. To integrate Virtualization Manager with a different SolarWinds Orion server, deactivate both the primary and the secondary license. The licenses then become available to be activated again on a different instance.

The following sections provide information about the different steps and order of activating your Virtualization Manager license, depending on the additional Orion Platform products you use and VMAN integration.

Environment

VMAN version 6.2 and later

Activate the primary license on a stand-alone VMAN install

If you install a standalone VMAN appliance without integration with an existing Orion Platform or the VIM Orion Platform. Important: For VMAN 7.0 and later, we do not recommend this configuration. For full VMAN features, you should integrate VMAN with VIM or an existing Orion Platform.
  1. Install or upgrade the VMAN appliance. For installation instructions, see Installing as a Virtual Appliance, for upgrade instruction, see the VMAN Upgrade Guide.
  2. Activate the primary license key on the appliance. For license activation instructions, see Activating a license key online or Activating a license key offline.

An error message is displayed if you attempt to install the secondary license on the Virtualization Manager appliance.

Activate the primary license on VMAN integrated with the stand-alone Orion Platform

If you install or upgrade a VMAN appliance that is integrated with a stand-alone Orion Platform. You install this Orion Platform by installing SolarWinds Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor (or VIM) on a dedicated server.

New installation

  1. Install the SolarWinds Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor and the Virtualization Manager appliance. For installation instructions, see Installing the SolarWinds Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor in standalone mode and Installing as a Virtual Appliance in the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administrator Guide.
  2. Integrate the Virtualization Manager appliance with the SolarWinds Orion server.
  3. Activate the primary license key on Virtualization Manager. For license activation instructions, see Activating a license key online or Activating a license key offline in the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administrator Guide.
  4. Activate the secondary license key on the SolarWinds Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor.
Note: You can also activate the primary license key on the SolarWinds Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor, and the secondary license key on Virtualization Manager.

Upgrade installation

  1. Upgrade the VMAN appliance. For upgrade instruction, see the VMAN Upgrade Guide.
  2. Install the SolarWinds Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor, see VMAN Upgrade Guide. This upgrades the stand-alone Orion Platform.
  3. Integrate the VMAN appliance with the SolarWinds Orion server.
  4. Activate the primary license key on the Virtualization Manager appliance. For license activation instructions, see Activating a license key online or Activating a license key offline in the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administrator Guide.
  5. Activate the secondary license key on the SolarWinds Orion server.

Note: You can also activate the primary license key on the SolarWinds Orion server, and the secondary license key on Virtualization Manager.

Activating the license on a VMAN instance licensed per VM

If you use a Virtualization Manager appliance that is licensed per VM instead of per socket, upgrade the products and activate the license keys in the following order.
  1. Upgrade the SolarWinds Orion server.
  2. Upgrade the Virtualization Manager appliance. For upgrade instruction, see the VMAN Upgrade Guide.
  3. Activate the primary license key on Virtualization Manager. For license activation instructions, see Activating a license key online or Activating a license key offline in the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administrator Guide.
  4. Activate the secondary license key on the SolarWinds Orion server.

Note: You can also activate the primary license key on the SolarWinds Orion Server, and the secondary license key on Virtualization Manager.

Activating the primary license on Virtualization Manager integrated with existing Orion Platform (NPM, SAM, SRM, etc)

If you install or upgrade a VMAN appliance that is integrated with an existing Orion Platform including NPM, SAM, SRM, NCM, or other Orion products, you only need to activate the primary license on the VMAN appliance.

In this case, you can leave the secondary license unused. However, you can also activate an evaluation license for SolarWinds Integrated Virtual Infrastructure Monitor.

New installation

  1. Install Virtualization Manager. For installation instructions, see Installing as a Virtual Appliance in the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administrator Guide.
  2. Install your Orion Platform products following those Installation Guides, such as NPM, SAM, SRM, NCM, or others.
  3. Activate the primary license key on Virtualization Manager. For license activation instructions, see Activating a license key online or Activating a license key offline in the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administrator Guide.

Upgrade installation

  1. Upgrade your Orion products using the SolarWinds Upgrade Guide.
  2. Upgrade Virtualization Manager. For upgrade instruction, see the VMAN Upgrade Guide.
  3. Activate the primary licensekey on Virtualization Manager. For license activation instructions, see Activating a license key online or Activating a license key offline in the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administrator Guide.
