Virtualization Manager determines the total IOPS for hosts, VMs, datastores, and clusters

Based on the version of vCenter you are using, Virtualization Manager uses two different processes to determine the total IOPS for hosts, vms, datastores, and clusters.


vCenter 4.1 or later

Virtualization Manager gathers information from Datastore performance counters.

The aggregate of two performance counters are used and then divided by the collection cycle.

(Average read requests per second across datastores + Average write requests per second across datastores) / Collection cycle per second

Note: NFS datastore information is accounted for in vCenter 4.1 or later.


vCenter 4.0.x or earlier

Virtualization Manager gathers information from Disk performance counters.

The sum of the number of disk commands issued per LUN is divided by the collection cycle.

Note: NFS datastore information is not accounted for in earlier versions of vCenter
