Cannot migrate Hyper-V VMs in VIM 7.0

Updated March 5, 2017

Overview

When migrating hyper-V VMs in VIM 7.0 from one host to another you may recieve the following error:

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'HOSTNAME': The credentials supplied to the package were not recognized .

Failed to authenticate the connection at the source host: no suitable credentials

Environment

  • VIM 7.0
  • NPM
  • VMAN

Cause

This can happen if Kerberos authentication is not set properly on one or both of the hosts.

Resolution

Note: You will need to perform these steps on all the hosts related to the migration. So both the host you are migrating from and the one you are migrating to.

1) For each host in Hyper-V Settings
a) Go to Hyper-V Settings for host in Hyper-V Manager.
b) Expand Live Migrations and click on Advanced Features.
c) Authentication protocol select 'Use Kerberos'.

2) For each host in Active Directory Users and Computers
a) Go to Tools/Active Directory Users and Computers
b) Click on Computers and find related host. Right click on host and from menu select Properties.
c) Go to tab Delegation.
d) Select 'Trust this computer for delegation to specified services only'. Then select 'Use Kerberos only'.
e) Then click on button Add for adding services. Find and select other host in cluster. Select service 'cifs' and click on OK button.
* Step e) has to be repeated for all other hosts in cluster and also for cluster itself.
f) Then click on button Add for adding services. Find and select other host in cluster. Select service 'Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service' and click on OK button.
* Step f) has to be repeated for all other hosts in cluster.
