HotFix fails to install due to h9collector files that need to be renamed

Overview

This article provides the resolution for the failed HotFix upgrade on VMAN due to the h9collector files need to be renamed error message.

Environment

  • VMAN 6.3.1
  • VMAN 6.3.0

Cause 

This is a common issue with the HotFix upgrade where it will not be able to proceed while the h9collector files are in use. The only way to workaround this is to either rename the files or backup the files and force remove them.

 

The files causing this issue are the h9collector.war.ORIG and h9collector.md5.ORIG files.

 

Note: You can  see the file causing the issue while doing the HotFix upgrade. It is indicated on the 'Status' field under SolarwindsMgmt > Hotfix in the VMAN management web console (https://<VMAN IP address>:5480.

Resolution

Either rename or force remove this files.

 

To rename the file:

  1. Log in to the VMAN via SSH connection as admin. Use putty tool.
  2. Change your user to root by running the command below:
    sudo su - root
  3. Change the directory to /usr/share/tomcat/webapps/ROOT/h9collector/.
  4. Rename the files h9collector.war.ORIG and h9collector.md5.ORIG to h9collector.war.ORIG.bak and h9collector.md5.ORIG.bak using the command below:
    mv h9collector.war.ORIG  h9collector.war.ORIG.bak
    mv h9collector.md5.ORIG  h9collector.md5.ORIG.bak

Note: this command will actually create a new h9collector file with .bak extension

  1. Start the HotFix update again.

 

To force remove the file:

  1. Log in to the VMAN via SSH connection as admin. Use putty tool.
  2. Change your user to root by running the command below:
    sudo su - root
  3. Change directory to /usr/share/tomcat/webapps/ROOT/h9collector/.
  4. Backup the files first by running the command below:
    cp h9collector.war.ORIG  /tmp
    cp h9collector.war.ORIG  /tmp

    Note: This command creates a copy of the file and also rename the file.
  5. Force remove the files h9collector.war.ORIG and h9collector.md5.ORIG to h9collector.war.ORIG.bak and h9collector.md5.ORIG.bak using the command below:
    rm h9collector.war.ORIG -f
    rm h9collector.war.ORIG  -f
  6. Start the HotFix update again.
