UDT installation overview

Supported Version: UDT 3.2.4 and earlier.

Manage risks and network access requirements associated with the rise of IP devices, with User Device Tracker (UDT). UDT delivers automated user and device tracking along with powerful switch port management capabilities so you can stay in control of who and what is connecting to your network.

Quickly find a computer or user, as well as track down lost or rogue devices with a simple search on a username, IP address, hostname, or MAC address. And, if the user or device is no longer connected, historical data shows the last known location. You can create a whitelist, set up a watch list, and be alerted immediately when specific users or devices connect. UDT lets you take immediate action to shut down a port to mitigate a threat or alleviate a network performance issue.

This guide supports the following installation scenarios:

  • Stand-alone installation
  • Installation in an existing Orion Platform
  • Evaluation installation

This installation guide is intended for use with version 3.2.4 and earlier of User Device Tracker. For version 3.3 and newer, use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to install or upgrade one or more Orion Platform products simultaneously.

Stand-alone installation

For a stand-alone installation of Orion Platform, you will install UDT on a dedicated server. This installation also requires a dedicated Orion server and connect to a dedicated Orion SQL database server to store monitored data, configurations, and more.

  1. Installation pre-flight checklist
  2. Review requirements:
    1. System requirements
    2. Port requirements
    3. Multi-module system guidelines

    4. UDT licensing information
  3. Prepare the Orion SQL database for UDT standalone
  4. Install User Device Tracker on an existing Orion platform

With this installation, you need to activate the primary license on the Orion Web Console.

Installation in an existing Orion Platform

Orion Platform supports installation into an existing Orion Platform. For this installation, you install UDT onto the existing Orion server and use the existing Orion SQL Database. The installation uses the Orion Installer. If your environment uses SolarWinds High Availability, follow the additional instructions as part of the installation.

  1. Installation pre-flight checklist
  2. Review requirements:
    1. System requirements
    2. Port requirements
    3. Multi-module system guidelines
    4. UDT licensing information
  3. Install User Device Tracker on an existing Orion platform

With this installation, you only need to activate the primary license on the Orion Web Console.

UDT architecture

Using SNMP calls to your network framework, SolarWinds User Device Tracker provides real time feedback on your monitored devices and users and trending through statistics stored in the Orion Platform database. Keeping with the SolarWinds common components infrastructure, there are no agents installed on your servers and no remote software to maintain. All calls are made in real time and displayed on a Web Console accessible from any supported browser.

The following diagram provides an overview of the current SolarWinds UDT architecture, including interactions among SolarWinds UDT components, the SolarWinds UDT database, Active Directory domain controllers, and the managed devices on your network.

Evaluation installation

Orion Platform supports a UDT install evaluation version with a trial period. This installation is a full installation of UDTwith a 30-day license. To continue with a full product license, contact SolarWinds Sales.

SolarWinds High Availability

UDT also supports SolarWinds High Availability for your environment. The SolarWinds Orion High Availability engine offers the following, key features:

  • Rapid failover: Ensures monitoring and data collection continuity.
  • Instant notification and alerting: High availability notifications are independent of the SolarWinds alerting service, so you’ll receive alerts even if the SolarWinds Orion server is down.
  • Customizable failover rules: Configure alerts to trigger failover based on application, system, process, and service health thresholds.
  • Easy installation and configuration: High availability is fully integrated into the SolarWinds Orion platform and is licensed per-pool.
  • To deploy HA, set up a secondary server, activate the license, and create a pool. If you evaluate HA, you can create an unlimited number of pools. After 30 days, apply a license key to convert the evaluation to a permanent license.
