Overview

This issue goes over a known issue that can occur where the UDT businesslayer plugin crashes on additional pollers where it is installed, once a day and always around the same time.

The following error message is seen in the BusinessLayerHost.log pertaining to the error on the additional pollers:

2016-03-25 11:10:34,745 [22] ERROR SolarWinds.BusinessLayerHost.BusinessLayerHostService - Unhandled exception caught by business layer host. System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
   at SolarWinds.Licensing.Framework.OnlineOperations.OnlineOperationBase`2.<>c__DisplayClass1.<Execute>b__0()
   at System.Threading.ThreadHelper.ThreadStart_Context(Object state)
   at System.Threading.ExecutionContext.RunInternal(ExecutionContext executionContext, ContextCallback callback, Object state, Boolean preserveSyncCtx)
   at System.Threading.ExecutionContext.Run(ExecutionContext executionContext, ContextCallback callback, Object state, Boolean preserveSyncCtx)
   at System.Threading.ExecutionContext.Run(ExecutionContext executionContext, ContextCallback callback, Object state)
   at System.Threading.ThreadHelper.ThreadStart()
   Sender: Name:domain-SolarWinds.UDT.BusinessLayer.dll
There are no context policies.

Environment

UDT 3.2 and later

Cause

The issue is caused due to one of two issues:

  • The additional poller is unable to validate the license with the primary poller and\or access for the primary poller to license check with SolarWinds is being blocked
  • The file Microsoft.Web.Services3.dll is missing from the UDT install directory on the additional pollers.

Resolution

 Run through the following steps to correct the issue:

  1. Download and apply this hotfix to all the pollers.
  2. Place exceptions in the firewall\proxy for the SolarWinds licensing servers.
  3. Search in the directory Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\UDT on the additional pollers. If the file Microsoft.Web.Services3.dll is not present in that directory, copy it from the directory above or from another directory for a different module.
