The installation of a new Additional Polling Engine, including initial configuration, follows the same steps required to complete the installation and configuration of a primary UDT polling engine, with the following additional considerations:

  • The most recent installer is available in your SolarWinds Customer Portal within the Orion_Additional_Polling_Engine_version.zip archive.
  • If you want to use any Orion Platform products for monitoring or managing any devices polled with an Additional Polling Engine, you must install the Additional Polling Engine version of the module you want to use on the server hosting your Additional Polling Engine. For more information, see the SolarWinds documentation for your Orion Platform product.
  • If you have configured an alert with a Send Email action to trigger on a node monitored by an additional polling engine, confirm that the additional polling engine has access to your SMTP server.

After completing the following procedure, SolarWinds UDT polling engines emulate the same behavior as SolarWinds NPM additional polling engines. They monitor only those ports on nodes associated with the SolarWinds UDT additional polling engine.

  1. If you downloaded the Orion Additional Polling Engine executable from the SolarWinds website, navigate to your download location, and then launch the executable.
  2. If you received the Orion Additional Polling Engine executable on physical media, browse to the executable file, and then launch it.

The executable extracts to a folder containing an HTML readme, an Installer Guide, and Additional Polling Engine installers for all SolarWinds products that support Additional Polling Engines.

  3. Launch the installer that corresponds to the SolarWinds product installed on your primary server.

If you have multiple SolarWinds products installed on your main Server, to ensure full functionality, install the Additional Web Server for each product.

  4. On the Welcome window of the Compatibility Check, provide the following information:

    • The host name or IP Address of your main server.
    • The user name and password of a user with administrative privileges to the Orion Web Console on your main server.
    • The installer detects the SolarWinds NPM additional polling engine if present and, in this case, it only installs SolarWinds UDT to an existing installation so that the additional polling engine will be usable for both SolarWinds UDT and SolarWinds NPM.
  5. Review the welcome page, and then click Next.
  6. Accept the license agreement, and then click Next.
  7. Chose a destination location (or accept the default), and then click Next.
  8. Click Next to start copying files.
  9. Click Finish to complete the installation wizard.
  10. Click Enter Licensing Information to enter your license, or click Continue Evaluation.
  11. Review the configuration wizard and welcome page, and then click Next.
  12. Configure the database for your environment by selecting the appropriate SQL Server database and Authentication information, and then click Next.
  13. Configure the database by selecting Use an existing database, and then selecting the name of the SQL Server database for the SolarWinds UDT server. Then click Next.
  14. Select whether to Create a new account, or Use an existing account, and then enter the account information. Then click Next.
  15. If the Website Settings page is displayed, configure the IP Address, Port, and Website Root Directory as appropriate and select whether you want to enable automatic login. Then click Next.
  16. Ensure that all the services displayed in the Service Settings page are checked, including the UDT Job Engine Plugin, and then click Next.
  17. Review the configuration wizard summary page, and then click Next.
  18. Click Finish.
