WebinarUpcoming Webinar: Know What’s Changed – with NEW Server Configuration Monitor

Change management in IT is critical. But, even with a good change management process, changes are too often not correctly tracked, if at all. The configuration of your servers and applications is a key factor in their performance, availability, and security. Many incidents can be tracked back to an authorized (and sometimes unauthorized) configuration change, whether to a system file, configuration file, or Windows® Registry entry. Join SolarWinds VP of product management Brandon Shopp to discover how the new SolarWinds® Server Configuration Monitor is designed to help you.

Overview

This article describes the issue when UDT polls Cisco Switches and you receive the following error:

<SNMP-3-AUTHFAIL: Authentication Failure for SNMP >

Environment

  • All versions of UDT
  • Layer 2 device being polled for Layer 3 statistics and VRF context polling when these devices do not support the technology

Resolution

Disable VRF and Layer 3 polling using the Orion Web Console

  1. On the Orion Console, go to Settings > Manage nodes.
  2. Find the node, highlight it, and then select edit.
  3. Browse to the bottom of the page and untick the box next to Poll Layer 3 data from device.
  4. Tick the box next to Disable VRF context polling.

Perform the following using SQL commands from the database (NPM 11.5.x only):

  1. Find the Nodeid
    1. Start > All Programs > Solarwinds Orion > Advanced Features > Database Manager > Add Default Server>

Expand the NPM Database (default )NetPerfmon.

    2. Right-click the database name > Select New Query.

    3. Select nodeid form nodesdata where caption name = <NodeCaption>

Where <Node Caption> is the node caption of the node you want to modify.

  1. Disable context polling:
    1. Right-click the database name > Select New Query.
    2. UPDATE UDT_NODECAPABILITY SET CONTEXTPOLLINGDISABLED=0 where nodeid = '<Nodeid>'

where <NodeID> is the node id gathered earlier.

  1. Disable Layer 3 polling:
    1. UPDATE UDT_NODECAPABILITY SET ENABLED=0 WHERE CAPABILITY=3 and  nodeid = '<Nodeid>'

where <NodeID> is the node id gathered earlier.
