New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements SRM offers in this release, and compare this release with previous releases of SRM.

Support for IBM XIV array

Support added for the IBM XIV storage array, monitored through the SMI-S provider embedded on the array.

Hardware Health monitoring

Starting with Dell EMC EqualLogic and IBM XIV arrays, you can now monitor, report on, and create alerts based on data from the fan speed, temperature and power supply sensors built into these devices.

For arrays with Hardware Health monitoring enabled, an additional view displays the Hardware Health resources (click image to enlarge):

Performance Analysis (PerfStack™)

Use the Performance Analysis (PerfStack™) dashboard to get both broad and in-depth visibility into SRM and your entire environment by correlating disparate historical data points across your infrastructure, including on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments in easy to read charts. Click My Dashboards > Home > Performance Analysis to get started correlating and analyzing data collected by your SolarWinds Orion solution to troubleshoot issues, identify root causes of intermittent issues, and make data-driven decisions on infrastructure changes.

Other improvements

  • Grouping and filtering added to summary resources
  • Includes all 6.3 hotfixes

New customer installation

For information about installing SRM, see the SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor Installation Guide.

Before you upgrade!

Use the following resources for planning and upgrading:

  • After SRM 6.4, future releases will no longer support Windows OS 2008 and 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. SRM 6.4 currently supports these versions. SolarWinds recommends that you upgrade to Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, or 2016 at your earliest convenience. For more information, see End of support notices.

  • When upgrading to SRM 6.4, if you added a site binding to a host name before you upgrade, you must bind the Orion Web Console to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). See this article.

  • When upgrading to SRM 6.4 with custom menus, you cannot see the Performance Dashboard link in the menu. For details, see this article.

  • Within SRM 6.4, the Alert Manager application has been deprecated and removed. Please use the web-based Alert Manager through the Orion Web Console to create and manage alerts. For more information, see End of support notices.

  • When upgrading an Additional Poller, you may receive this error :"The license we have for Orion Scalability Engine is outdated". See this article for details to resolve.

  • If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.
  • If you have edited resource properties, the All Groups resource may be empty after upgrading to SRM 6.4.
  • When upgrading to SRM 6.4, using the group by feature for custom properties may return no results, and the data loading may hang or not complete. All regular functionality is unaffected by the issue.
  • Always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • If you have SAM without NPM, upgrade SAM first. SAM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.

How to upgrade

If you are upgrading from a previous version, use the following resources for planning and implementation:

Known issues

SRM and SRM Profiler cannot be integrated using TLS 1.1 or 1.2

Issue: In release 6.3 and 6.4, SRM and SRM Profiler cannot be integrated using the TLS 1.1 or TLS 1.2 protocols.

Workaround: Use TLS 1.0 or SSL.
