SRM now uses Orion Platform 2017.3

This provides the following new features and improvements that can be used with SRM:

Installer

Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to install and upgrade one or more Orion Platform products simultaneously in your environment. Installing a fresh, new Orion product completes with ease following the prompts and configurations of Orion Installer. When installing new products into an existing Orion environment, the Orion Installer verifies compatibility between the product versions, providing notifications if additional steps are needed. The Orion Installer also supports upgrades with a generated upgrade path, merging the capabilities of the Product Upgrade Advisor into the installer.

.NET 4.6 is required to use the new installer and will be downloaded when you run the installer.

The installer:

  • Provides an easy-to-follow install path. The installer will check for product updates, and updates the installation steps to complete complex upgrades and installations with ease.
  • Runs preflight checks to ensure your environment specifications match the system requirements for selected product installs. If changes are needed, the installer provides guidance for required versions.
  • Guides you through each product install and upgrade by providing upgrade paths custom-made for your current environment.
  • Automatically runs the Configuration Wizard as needed after product installs to complete database and configuration tasks.
  • Advises on additional installations for SolarWinds High Availability servers, Additional Polling Engines, and Additional Web Servers.

Dashboards and widgets

The new Customize Page significantly simplifies and streamlines how you build your dashboards or views. Drag and drop resources, now known as widgets, exactly where you want them on your page, including on to blank areas to create new columns.

  • Start searching for widgets in two clicks from any customizable page.
  • Mark favorite widgets so you can quickly add them to new dashboards or pages.
  • Drag and drop widgets directly on to the pages or move widgets to new locations.

Windows Authentication for SQL

Use Windows user accounts for day-to-day data storage and retrieval between your Orion server communication and the SQL server. In the Configuration Wizard, use a Windows account that is exempt from password change policies to access the database.

Multi-subnet High Availability

Distribute HA pool members to different subnets in this new update for almost instantaneous, automated failover to a secondary server on a different subnet to ensure continuous monitoring when a component failure occurs. SolarWinds High Availability (HA) provides failover HA for your environment maintained through the Orion web console. Easily create an HA pool, update your secondary server, and activate HA in your current Orion environment.

PerfStack

Get both broad and in-depth visibility into your environment by correlating disparate data points across your infrastructure, including on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments, in easy-to-read charts.

This version of PerfStack™ includes:

  • Real-time polling at approximately one second intervals for specific metrics.
  • Added metrics for Syslog, SNMP traps, UnDP, Network Insight for F5 and ASA, IPSLA Operations (VNQM), Configuration changes (NCM), and script monitors (SAM).
  • View the data behind supported charts with the Data Explorer.
  • Drag and drop entities to the chart area.
  • Open an analysis project directly from an entity with common metrics already added.
  • Go to the details page for an entity from the Performance Analysis dashboard.

Manage Nodes

The new Manage Entities page presents information about your nodes in a more intuitive fashion, including more intuitive filtering options and contextual management options.

  • Search your entities using the display name or IP address.
  • Sort entities by display name, status, or IP address.
  • Quickly view which nodes are muted and resume alerts with one click.
  • Add more information by editing the rows

Other improvements

  • .NET 4.6.2 support
  • 64-bit only installs
  • PerfStack improvements
  • Deploy Orion agents to Raspberry Pi (Raspbian version 8.0 on ARMv6 or ARMv7 processors, 32-bit). If you upgrade to this version, you can install any Linux agent plug-ins on Rasberry Pi devices.
  • Improved memory performance.
  • Search for nodes anywhere through the global navigation.

New customer installation

Please refer to the SolarWinds SRM Installation Guide.

Before you upgrade!

Use the following resources for planning and upgrading:

  • After SRM 6.4, future releases will no longer support Windows OS 2008 and 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. For more information, see End of support notices.

  • When upgrading, if you added a site binding to a host name before you upgrade, you must bind the Orion Web Console to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). See this article.

  • When upgrading with custom menus, you cannot see the Performance Dashboard link in the menu. For details, see this article.

  • Since SRM 6.4, the Alert Manager application has been deprecated and removed. Please use the web-based Alert Manager through the Orion Web Console to create and manage alerts. For more information, see End of support notices.

  • When upgrading an Additional Poller, you may receive this error :"The license we have for Orion Scalability Engine is outdated". See this article for details to resolve.

  • If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.
  • If you have edited resource properties, the All Groups resource may be empty after upgrading.
  • When upgrading, using the group by feature for custom properties may return no results, and the data loading may hang or not complete. All regular functionality is unaffected by the issue.
  • Always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • If you have SAM without NPM, upgrade SAM first. SAM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.
