Welcome to SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor Version 6.1. Storage Resource Monitor (SRM) leverages an intuitive point-and-click interface that provides a unified monitoring view of all the layers in your storage stack. By continuously scanning the network, SRM provides storage performance data, automates storage capacity planning, maps VMs to physical storage and allows end-to-end visibility, making administration more efficient.

Storage Resource Monitor 6.1 consists of Profiler and the Storage Resource Monitor Orion Module. The SRM Orion Module is a separate install and can be downloaded from your customer portal. The SRM Orion Module is a native-Orion module that allows you to monitor, report and receive alerts on your SAN and NAS devices in a single window. The SRM Orion Module can be integrated with Storage Manager sharing the same license and allowing both products to run together. For more information, see "Introduction to Storage Resource Monitor."

New Features and Improvements

The SRM Orion Module Version 6.1 includes the following new features:

  • Added support for the following storage devices:
    • Dell Compellent
    • DotHill AssuredSAN 4xxx/5xxx
    • EMC Symmetrix VMAX/VMAXe/DMX-4
    • HP 3PAR
    • HP P2xxx/MSA

Notes:

  • Support was added for the following storage devices in previous versions:
    • EMC VNX / CLARiiON family
    • EMC VNX NAS Stand-alone Gateway / Celerra
    • Dell EqualLogic PS Series
    • NetApp E-Series (LSI)
    • IBM DS 3xxx / 4xxx / 5xxx
    • Dell MD3xxx
    • NetApp Filers running Data OnTAP 8 in 7-mode and Cluster-mode (aka Clustered Data OnTAP)
  • If you have the Storage Manager Integration Module installed, you must uninstall it before installing the SRM Orion module.
  • You cannot install the Storage Manager Integration Module on top of the SRM Orion module

Storage Manager 6.1 includes the following new features and improvements:

  • All 6.0 fixes and associated hotfixes

If you are upgrading to Storage Resource Monitor 6.1 from Storage Manager version 5.7.1 or earlier, the following items apply:

  • Note: Storage Manager 5.7.1 with hotfix 1 is excluded from this list
  • The report “MDisk Group Performance” only shows performance data collected after the 6.1 upgrade. No data collected prior to the 6.1 upgrade is displayed. If you want to view “MDisk Group Performance” report data prior to the application of this upgrade, the “MDisk Group Performance –DEPRECATED” report must be used. This report can be found in “Quick Reports” and is also be available from “Scheduled Reports” and “My Reports.” If you want to have all data in a single report, contact SolarWinds support for assistance with migrating all old data to the new format.
  • If you have an IBM SVC device, depending on the size of your Storage Manager database, delays may be experienced while upgrading. The installer wizard is present until the process has completed. Do not close the window until the process has completed.

Notes:

  • If you have IBM SVC v7000 arrays, the SRM Orion Module 6.0.x counts both internal and external disks against your license. The SRM Profiler Module only counts external physical MDisks against your license and the internal disks are ignored. For example, if you have three external MDisks and five internal disks, the SRM Profile Module counts three against your license. With a future release of SRM Profiler Module, both external and internal disks will be counted and the total count against your license would be eight

  • When upgrading from any prior versions of Storage Manager 6.0 to the latest release, the proxy agents allow weak ciphers. This procedure provides a fix that hardens SRM Profiler proxy agents against any man-in-the-middle attacks originating within your own network. This fix should be applied to any SolarWinds SRM Profiler proxy agent running version 6.0. For full details and instructions, see Fixing Storage Manager Agent v6.0 SSL Cipher Vulnerability Issues.
Note: Users running SRM Profiler (STM) 6.0 with Hotfix1 are excluded from this issue and there is no need to apply this fix.

Installing this Version

Warnings: SolarWinds recommends that you complete the following tasks before implementing any changes:

Upgrading

  • Ensure you have a backup copy of your Storage Manager server and data. SolarWinds recommends that you either backup your database or create a snapshot of the entire server. For more information on backing up the Storage Manager database see "Backing up the Storage Manager Database."
  • The same hardware requirements apply to version 6.1 as previous versions. Additionally, you must be running version 5.6 or higher before attempting to upgrade.
  • If you install Storage Manager onto an existing Storage Manager deployment, the installer migrates your current Storage Manager server in place (all settings and history are saved). Just execute the Storage Manager server installer on the Storage Manager server and it will find the current Storage Manager install and migrate the configuration and history.

New Installs

  • SolarWinds recommends that you do NOT install Storage Manager on the same server as the SolarWinds Virtualization Manager or any SolarWinds Orion product (NPM, SAM, SRM Orion Module, etc...)

Integration with Virtualization Manager

  • You must install Virtualization Manager version 6.2 or higher.

Integration with Orion-based products

  • This KB shows the compatibility of the SRM Orion Module with other Orion products

All installs and upgrades

  • Linux installations require the "libaio" library or the installation will fail. You can install the appropriate libaio package using the associated package manager for your distribution.
  • When using Windows 7 & 8, and Windows Server 2008 & 2012,(or Vista for evaluations only), UAC must be disabled for the duration of the upgrade (until after the configuration wizard completes).
  • If you need a temporary license to install an instance of the software in a lab, download an evaluation copy of the latest software from the SolarWinds website. Evaluation copies come with a fully functional 30-day license. Test the change in a lab environment that mimics your production environment.

Licensing this Version of Storage Manager

If you are running Storage Manager version 5.7.2 or lower, new licenses keys are required when installing Storage Manager 6.1. The license keys are available in your Customer Portal. SolarWinds recommends that you get your key from the Customer Portal before proceeding with the installation. If you do not find your key in the Customer Portal, contact our customer service team.

If you are upgrading from Storage Manager 6.0, you can upgrade straight to Storage Manager 6.1.

To obtain your key

  1. Login to your Customer Portal and select “License Management.”
  2. Navigate to Storage Manager v6.1 and locate the Activation Key.
  3. Copy your activation key to a safe place before continuing. You will need it after the upgrade completes.

License Deactivation

  • If you are running Storage Manager with a Backup Profiler Evaluation license key, contact SolarWinds support for assistance before upgrading
  • If you are running Storage Manager with a Storage Manager license, no deactivation is needed
  • If you are running Storage Manager with a Backup Profiler license key, prior to upgrading your Storage Manager server, you must deactivate your existing Backup Profiler license.
    • If you want to upgrade to Storage Manager 6.1 and still use Backup Profiler, SolarWinds recommends that you clone or migrate your current Backup Profiler install to a different server. After Backup Profiler is on a different server, deactivate the Backup Profiler license on the original server and then upgrade to Storage Manager 6.1
  • Perform the following steps to deactivate your Storage Profiler or Backup Profiler license:
    1. Click the "Settings” icon in the upper right corner of the Storage Manager Website.
    2. Click License Manager.
    3. Click Deactivate.

After the license has been deactivated, upgrade to Storage Manager 6.1 and then apply your new license key.

License Enforcement

Storage Manager enforces licensing during the upgrade. The installation aborts if any of the following conditions are detected:

  • Expired maintenance
  • Number of monitored disk exceeds the maximum allowed licensed disk count
  • Running Storage Manager with a Storage Profiler or Backup Profiler license

Applying a License with no Internet Access

  • If you are running Storage Manager version 5.7.2 or lower on a server that does not have Internet access, after upgrading to Storage Manager 6.1 you must install a new version 6.1 license key. This can be done by downloading and activating your license offline via the customer portal. Failure to install a version 6.1 license key could cause web site slowness and data collection issues.

Licensing this Version of the SRM Orion Module

The SRM Orion Module uses the SolarWinds License Manager. This is a free utility that manages your SolarWinds Licenses. For complete instructions on licensing, see "Licensing the SRM Orion Module
