Run an ECOM Service Check for EMC SMI-S

Table of contents

Overview

The following article describes how to check if the EMC-based SMI-S provider is running or needs to be repaired/upgraded to a newer version (or at least to see if it can respond to "Display Version"'). EMC SMI-S providers are sensitive and at short notice it can stop responding.

Environment

STM v5, v5.1, v5.2, v5.2.2, v5.3.3, v5.6.2, v5.7.1 and v6.0

Steps

  1. RDP to the Windows box hosting the SMI-S application.
  2. Navigate to Services.msc and find the entry aptly named: ECOM. This should tie back to: C:\program Files\EMC\ECIM\ECOM\bin\ecom.exe.
  3. Ensure that the Status is Started.
    Note: You can also test the status of the SMI-S provider itself by launching it from C:\program Files\EMC\ECIM\ECOM\bin\. From \bin, there is a test utility named,TestSmiProvider.exe.
  4. Click Enter about seven times or until the cursor is at: <localhost:5988>.
  5. Type ein (stands for Enumerate Instances).
  6. For Class: type cim_computersystem.

    Normal output will show:

    (localhost:5988) ? ein
    Class: cim_computersystem
    ++++ Testing EnumerationInstanceNames: cim_computersystem ++++
    Instance 0:
    Clar_StorageProcessorSystem.CreationClassName="Clar_StorageProcessorSystem",Name

    Instance 2:
    Clar_StorageSystem.CreationClassName="Clar_StorageSystem",Name="CLARiiON+APM0007
    Instance 3:
    SE_ManagementServer.CreationClassName="SE_ManagementServer",Name="sup-aus-milh-0

    Enumerate 4 instance names; repeat count 1;return data in 0.359375 seconds

    Retrieve and Display data - 1 Iteration(s) In 0.421875 Seconds

  7. Press Enter to continue. You will also be able to do normal things like DISPLAY VERSION: command is dv

    (localhost:5988) ? dv
    ++++ Display version information ++++

    CIM ObjectManager Name: EMC:10.110.6.101

    CIMOM Version: EMC CIM Server Version 2.7.3.3.0.8
