Overview

This article provides steps for restarting the SMI-S Provider on Storage Arrays for multiple devices. The first thing you'll need to determine is if the SMI-S provider is embedded into the Storage Array itself or if the SMI-S provider is installed on a 3rd party server elsewhere. The majority of the instructions set below are from the perspective that the SMI-S provider is installed on a 3rd party server elsewhere and not embedded into the Storage Array itself.

NOTE:

IBM XIV's for example where the SMI-S provider is embedded into the Array itself, you cannot restart the SMI-S provider service or daemon. IBM support reserves the right for themselves to be able to restart the SMI-S provider. This requires those who have such a setup to open a Support ticket with IBM support to get them to be able to connect to the Array and issue a low level command to restart the service/daemon.
