Use the SAM Oracle Database template and Oracle User Experience monitor without ODBC

Table of contents

Updated: November 22, 2017

This article describe how to use the SAM Oracle Database template and Oracle User Experience monitor without an Open Database Connection (ODBC) to Oracle databases.

SolarWinds APM/SAM 3.5 and later

Note: The SAM product was previously known as the Application Performance Monitor (APM) product.

  1. Download the Oracle Install Client software from the following locations, depending on whether SAM is installed on a Windows 64-bit or 32-bit server. Note that you must accept the end-user license agreement and sign into the Oracle website before downloading the software.
  1. Extract the contents of the downloaded file to your local folder.
  2. Copy the extracted content to the directory where the SAM Oracle driver is installed. The path name may vary as shown in the following examples.

    Program Files (x86)\Solarwinds\Orion\APM\OracleClient
    Program Files\Solarwinds\Orion\APM\OracleClient

  • The account under which Orion services run must have Full Control privileges for files in the OracleClient directory.
  • You cannot use Oracle credentials with limited permissions to run the SQL statements defined in the Oracle User Experience monitor. This will produce an error similar to the following:  table or view doesn't exist.
  • If you have multiple polling engines, the Oracle client software must be installed on your additional pollers.
