Upgrade Orion Core products - Best practices

This article provides information and steps on some best practices when upgrading Orion Core products. 



  • Any version of Orion
  • Any module
  • Any version of Windows


Here are a few recommendations before running any Orion installation program to upgrade an Orion module:


1. Backup your Orion database using SQL Management Studio tools.


2. Disable User Access Control

  1. Go to Start and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click User Accounts.
  3. Click Change User Account Control settings.
  4. Move the slider to the Never notify position, and then click OK.
  5. Reboot.


3. Disable any anti-virus applications performing On-access scans.


4. Ensure that Solarwinds Orion has access to all of the required folders:

  1. Run the Orion Permission Checker tool.  This is typically located in the following location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Solarwinds\Orion\OrionPermissionChecker.exe

  1. Click Check.
  2. Click Repair.
  3. Re-check to confirm there are no failures.
    Note: In cases where failures recur in a short time, set the permissions to those folders manually.


5. Run the installation executable as admin by right-clicking it and clicking Run as Administrator.


Go through the installation wizard and then the Configuration Wizard.
