Troubleshoot missing services in Service Control Manager

Overview

This article provides steps on how to verify the validity of this using Windows tools outside of SAM when some services are missing from SAM's Service Control Manager.  

Environment

  • All versions of Windows
  • All versions of SAM with the Windows Service Control Manager.

Steps

The following steps are to be performed on the system hosting the Poller that the Node is assigned to:

 

Method 1 - Using WMI
1. Run wbemtest.exe.
2. Enter the following information:

  • NameSpace: \\{IP}\root\cimv2    ***Where {IP} is the IP specified within the Node.
  • Username: {domain\username}  ***Where {domain\username} is username value in the Credential used by the Node.

3. Run following query:

select * from win32_service

The results list all services on the system. See if the missing service is listed here.

 

Method 2 - Using RPC
1. Run a CMD Window as {domain\username}  ***Where {domain\username} is username value in the Credential used by the Node.


2. Run the following command:

sc \\{IP} query   ***Where {IP} is the IP specified within the Node.

The results list all services on the system. See if the missing service is listed here.

  • If the service is missing, the issue is environmental and outside of SAM.
  • If the service is listed, verify the following file for any errors:

C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Logs\APM\RealTime\SolarWinds.APM.ProcessExplorer.log

 

Note: You may need to increase logging to Verbose within the SolarWoinds Log Adjuster for the Service Control Manager to get the required data within the log.
