Overview

Within the SolarWinds Orion website/Web Console, Node Details Page and Asset Inventory tab, there is a Software Inventory view that displays the current list of installed software / applications on Windows based nodes.

The information available will vary depending on the polling method used by the related Windows node.

Environment

SAM 6.x

Detail

Polling of software inventory data depends on method of polling.

For WMI, our software is polling information from two registry branches:

  • SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
  • SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

There are usually a number of registry keys that have the same display name, they are filtered by display name and version, all Windows updates (like KBs) are filtered, so only records with unique display name and version will be stored/saved in the SolarWinds Orion Database, then visible via the Orion website/Web Console, Node Details Page and Asset Inventory tab, Software Inventory view.

For SNMP, our software polls using the following OIDs:

  • DisplayName: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.2
  • Version: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.101
  • Publisher: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.4
  • InstallDate: 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.6.3.1.5

It iss filtering by drivers and other “non-software” records, so may return duplicated records. Once polled, the results are stored/saved in the SolarWinds Orion Database, then visible via the Orion website/Web Console, Node Details Page and Asset Inventory tab, and Software Inventory view.
