SAM Radius Experience Monitor Status is Unstable

Updated January 2, 2017

Overview

This article details the resolution of an authentication error received while attempting to connect to the Radius User Experience Monitor:

Radius authentication was failed, unable to communicate with remote RADIUS server!
Exception message is: No such host is known

Environment

  • SAM 6.4 and 6.5
  • Windows Server 2008 and 2012

Cause

The system default locale is set to a different language, such as Japanese, than the Orion server. The function encodePapPassword encrypts a given password by using a common secret and 16-byte authenticator.

When concatenating bytes of common secret and authenticator, the authenticator is converted to a string by the system default locale. If the default encoding uses multiple bytes (like Japanese iso-2022-jp), this concatenation gives the wrong results, causing the encrypted password to be wrong. The Radius server rejects the connection attempt.

Resolution

This issue will be fixed in a future SAM release. As a workaround, change the Windows 2012 System Regional locale "Language for non-Unicode programs" to English.

Note: Changing from one locale to another may cause issues with other products or systems.
