Updated July 19, 2018

Following are the minimum configuration requirements for VMware Virtual Machines (VMs) and Microsoft Virtual Servers monitored by NPM, SAM, and/or VMAN.

You must maintain the Orion database server on a separate, physical drive.

Virtualization software

ESXi and ESX Server 4.1 or later

VMware vSphere 4.1 or later

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2

VMware tools

Install VMware Tools on all VMs you want to monitor.

For monitored ESXi and ESX servers, VMware Tools are not required but provide access to additional information, such as IP addresses.

See also Orion recommended requirements for VMAN.

SAM uses the VMware API to monitor VMware ESX Servers and their component features. You can manage hosts as SNMP nodes, but ICMP also works.
