Read this section for descriptions of new features and improvements offered in this release. For previous release information, see SAM Documentation - Previous versions.

New features and improvements in Orion Platform 2018.4

  • Centralized upgrades: Upgrade Additional Polling Engines, Additional Web Servers, and High Availability servers directly from the Orion Web Console. Upgrades run in parallel, reducing the time required to upgrade large deployments. >> Learn more
  • User authentication with the SAML protocol: Log into the Orion Web Console using Okta or Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) credentials. >> Learn more
  • Updated PerfStack-powered chart widgets: Export chart data, configure thresholds for data, and change time periods of data displayed for individual resources and nodes.
  • Orion Diagnostics: Display and download diagnostics for polling engines with the Collect Diagnostics wizard.

See the Orion Platform 2018.4 Release Notes for details.

New customer installation

Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer, available in the Customer Portal, to install SAM. After installation, refer to the SAM Getting Started Guide to learn about configuring and customizing SAM.

Before you upgrade

If upgrading from a previous version of SAM, be aware of the following considerations:

  • To ensure a smooth upgrade, do the following:
    • Read these Release Notes.
    • Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to direct your upgrade path and run preflight environment checks.
    • Make sure all servers comply with the SAM 6.7.1 system requirements.

Deprecation notice: Starting with Orion Platform 2018.4, Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 are not supported for the Orion server anymore. For the database server, SQL Server 2012, 2012 SP1, 2012 SP2, 2012 SP3, and 2012 SP4 are no longer supported.

    • Backup any custom code, such as changed SolarWinds .css files or added .js files. >> Learn More
  • Starting in SAM 6.6.1, the Application Dependencies feature is disabled when upgrading from earlier versions of SAM to prevent performance issues during upgrades for environments with large quantities of nodes. To start Application Dependency polling after an upgrade, enable the Application Dependencies feature.
  • If you added a site binding to a host name in an earlier SAM version, you must bind the Orion Web Console to a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN). See this article
