Server & Application Monitor 6.2.4 Release Notes

Last updated: June 7, 2016

These release notes describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in this release. They also provide information about upgrades and describe work-arounds for known issues.

For SAM environment requirements, see the SAM 6.2.4 System Requirements.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements SAM offers in this release, or compare this release with previous releases of SAM.

Brand new look and feel

The first thing you’ll notice about this release is that the SolarWinds Orion Platform user interface is more modern-looking. The main menu bar on the top of  every page has been reorganized to make navigation faster and easier, and to save space so there’s more room for data. We've also condensed the Notifications into a drop-down located in the upper-right corner.

Assign application templates to groups

You can now assign application templates to both static and dynamic groups, which saves you time and reduces gaps in monitoring servers and applications that come online. Assigning applications to dynamic groups facilitates the automatic monitoring of applications running on servers added through the discovery process. Applications can also be automatically removed when a node no longer meets the criteria of the dynamic group.

ServiceNow integration

You can now integrate SolarWinds Orion Platform products with the ServiceNow, Inc. incident management system. With this integration you can:

  • Automatically create incidents in ServiceNow based on alerts that trigger in your SolarWinds Orion products

  • Synchronize the acknowledgement of SolarWinds alerts and ServiceNow incidents.

  • Update, close, and reopen ServiceNow incidents.

More powerful and easier-to-use discovery

As part of the new discovery, you can add an Active Directory (AD) Controller and then select the Organizational Units (OUs) you want to scan. Using AD for discovery is particularly useful for adding large subnets because SolarWinds Orion products can communicate directly with the devices instead of scanning every IP address.

Automatic Monitoring imports discovered devices, such as nodes, interfaces, or volumes, based on the monitoring settings you define. This means you don't have to go through the discovery import wizard after each discovery. Anything new will be monitored automatically.

New customer installation

For information about installing SAM, see the SAM Getting Started Guide.

Before you upgrade!

If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following considerations:

  • If SAM and DPA are installed on the same server, follow this article before upgrading SAM.
  • SAM 6.2.4 no longer supports OS Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, 2008, 2008 SP2, and 2008 R2 without SP1.
  • SAM 6.2.4 has new port requirements: 5671 (Rabbit MQ messaging), 17791 (agent communication to 2008 R2 SP1), 17778 (SW Information Service, agent communication to 2012).
  • Learn more about the SAM 6.2.4 improved standalone installer with this article.
  • If you have edited resource properties, the All Groups resource may be empty after upgrading to SAM 6.2.4. This is a known issue for Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
  • When upgrading to SAM 6.2.4, using the group by feature for custom properties may return no results, and the data loading may hang or not complete. All regular functionality is unaffected by the issue. This is a known issue for Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
  • If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.
  • Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.
  • Typically, you always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all Orion products. Depending on your upgrade path, you may need to upgrade another product before progressing to an NPM upgrade.
  • If you have SAM without NPM, upgrade SAM first. SAM includes platform features to support all Orion products. Depending on your upgrade path, you may need to upgrade another product before progressing to a SAM upgrade.

How to upgrade
