Oracle User Experience Monitor error: ORA-12545 Connect failed because target host or object does not exist

Updated: November 4, 2016

Overview

When monitoring the Oracle RAC instance using the Oracle User Experience monitor with Oracle drivers, the following error displays:

ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist

Environment

  • All versions of SAM
  • Oracle RAC instances

Cause

The SolarWinds server and the Oracle servers are split across two domains. When SAM attempts to poll the Oracle database residing on the Oracle RAC, it uses the host name which does not fully qualify it. Without it being fully qualified, the Orion server will be unable to resolve it correctly.

As this is a RAC instance, some of the host names (if present in same domain), may be able to resolve correctly. When the TAF listener redirects it to another member of the RAC, it is unable to resolve and will throw the ORA-12545 error.

Resolution

  1. Open a Remote Desktop connection to the Orion server or polling engine.
  2. Go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc.
  3. Open the hosts file with Notepad.
  4. Add all possible combinations of the host names and FQDN entries here for the Oracle databases. This ensures that the Oracle driver can always correctly resolve the Oracle database to the correct address.
