Windows Update Status Inaccurately Shown as Disabled in Asset Inventory

Updated October 25, 2017

Overview

This article details a bug which results in the Windows Status Update in Asset Inventory being interpreted as disabled when it is, in fact, enabled.

Environment

  • SAM 6.4 and later

Cause

Due to changes made to the Windows Update settings logic in Windows 10, the necessary registry entries in the Windows registry have been removed. These registry entries are used by Asset Inventory to update the settings polling:

2017-10-10 15:07:16,825 [STP SmartThreadPool Thread #0] DEBUG SolarWinds.Orion.Pollers.Framework.WMI.WmiHelper - CreateWmiRequest Request:10.140.126.103\root\CIMV2 [administrator], Query: [select MemoryDevices from Win32_PhysicalMemoryArray], Options: [LI], Retries: 2, RetryInterval: 10000 2017-10-10 15:07:16,856 [STP SmartThreadPool Thread #0] DEBUG SolarWinds.AssetInventory.Pollers.Helpers.WmiRegistryPollingHelper - Value for AUOptions cannot be retreived from key SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU 2017-10-10 15:07:16,856 [STP SmartThreadPool Thread #0] DEBUG SolarWinds.AssetInventory.Pollers.Helpers.WmiRegistryPollingHelper - Value for AUOptions cannot be retreived from key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

No value is received for the [AUOptions] column. This missing value is incorrectly interpreted in SWIS and UI as "Windows Update Status is DISABLED".

Resolution

No resolution currently available.

Further investigation is necessary to determine how these settings work in Windows 2016, and what meaning the missing value has in comparison with values in Windows 2003, Windows 2008, and Windows 2012 r1/r2. Polling will be changed or extended accordingly.
