Use the SAM Oracle Database template and Oracle User Experience monitor without ODBC

Table of contents

Updated July 12, 2018

Overview

This article describe how to add Oracle Install Client software to the Orion server so you can use the SAM Oracle Database template and Oracle User Experience monitor without an Open Database Connection (ODBC) to Oracle databases.

Environment

SolarWinds 6.2 and later

Steps

  1. Log into http://www.oracle.com (© 2018 Oracle, available at https://www.oracle.com, obtained on July 12, 2018).
  2. Download the Oracle Install Client software from the following locations, depending on whether SAM is installed on a Windows 64-bit or 32-bit server.
  1. Extract the contents of the downloaded file to a local folder.
  2. Copy the extracted content to the directory where the SAM Oracle driver is installed on the Orion server. The path name may vary as shown in the following examples.

    Program Files (x86)\Solarwinds\Orion\APM\OracleClient
    -or-
    Program Files\Solarwinds\Orion\APM\OracleClient
  3.  If you have Additional Polling Engines (APEs), install the Oracle client software on those machines also.

Notes:

  • The account under which Orion services run must have Full Control privileges for files in the OracleClient  directory. You cannot use Oracle credentials with limited permissions to run the SQL statements defined in the Oracle User Experience monitor. This will produce an error similar to: table or view doesn't exist.
  • If you have Additional Polling Engines (APEs), install the Oracle client software on those machines also.
