The sqlserver.exe status shows as Down in AppInsight for SQL

Updated December 14, 2016

Overview

When polling a SQL Server with AppInsight for SQL, the sqlserver.exe process shows as Down in the Application Monitor which causes the application to report as down.

Environment

  • SAM 6.0 or later
  • Named SQL Server Instances

Cause

The issue is caused when the SQL instance is a named one. This configuration is not reflected within SAM. Instead the SQL server is added in SAM via the default Instance, MSSQLSERVER.

Resolution

Option 1:

  1. Open the Orion Web Console > Settings > SAM Settings.
  2. Go to Manage Application Monitors > un-manage the current AppInsight for SQL.
  3. Go to Application Monitor Templates.
  4. Assign the "AppInsight for SQL" Template again to the same node, this time select the correct Instance Name
(the Instance Name can be gathered from the SQL Server via SQL Server Management Studio).

The above will allow you to keep historical statistics and now monitor the SQL Server correctly.

Option 2:

  1. Go to the current AppInsight for SQL Application Details page > edit the Application Monitor.
  2. Find and expand  "SQL Server" with Component Type "Process Monitor - Windows".
  3. Override Template > Disable.
  4. Create a separate Template to monitor the process via Settings > SAM Settings > Component Monitor Wizard.

Option 3:

  1. Edit your appinsight for sql
  2. Expand the sqlserv.exe component
  3. Flip fetching method from WMI to RPC
