Orion 2017.3 feature: Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring

To support hybrid environments, the Orion Platform can retrieve data from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure cloud service platforms for cloud instances and VMs that can be used to track availability, performance, applications, and more. Examples of data gathered include status, storage capacity, memory usage, and IP addresses. 
After collecting status and metrics from cloud services, the Orion Platform compiles data to: 

  • Display a consolidated view of cloud, hybrid, and on-premises systems in the Orion Web Console.
  • Monitor and manage an entire infrastructure with Orion Platform tools.
  • Track the overall health of a system, as well as individual resources, for auditing purposes.

Cloud monitoring requirements

AWS cloud service An Access Key ID and Secret Access Key for an AWS account configured to interact with the Orion Platform. Consult your system administrator for details. 
Azure cloud service

An Azure subscription and Active Directory (AD) tenant configured to interact with the Orion Platform. Consult with your subscription administrator for details. You will need the following Azure credentials:

  • Subscription ID
  • Tenant/Directory ID
  • Client/Application ID
  • Application Secret Key

Cloud monitoring recommendations 

For optimal performance, SolarWinds recommends the following limits for cloud monitoring: 

  • Up to 10 cloud service accounts
  • Up to 1,000 instances/VMs to monitor
  • Up to 1,000 volumes to monitor
  • Up to 1,000 instances/VMs managed as nodes
  • Up to 1,000 Orion agents deployed on managed nodes

Note: Before exceeding recommended limits, consider the impact on polling load, costs incurred due to possible API request overages, and the possible need to expand hardware, CPU resources, memory, etc. 

Get started with cloud monitoring

The way your organization configures AWS and/or Azure directly impacts your ability to monitor cloud instances/VMs. Before adding a cloud account in the Orion Web Console, account IAM permissions must be configured to provide access to the Orion Platform. For details, review the SAM 6.5 documentation and consult your system administrator. 

After logging into the Orion Web Console, click My Dashboards > Cloud to access the Cloud Summary page. In the Getting Started resource, click Monitor my Cloud Instances.

Select a Cloud Service Provider.


On the Cloud Settings tab, enter a Display Name for the account and provide credentials. If the Orion server requires a proxy server to connect to certain websites, click "Are you behind a proxy?" to configure settings. Click Test Connection to verify credentials. 


Click Continue to move to the API Polling Options tab, where you can:

  • Toggle Azure Monitor API polling on and off.
  • Adjust the Azure VM polling frequency. The default interval is 5 minutes.)
  • Click Manage Alerts to enable or disable out-of-the-box cloud polling alerts, or define custom alerts.

When the Instances/VMs tab appears, select instances/VMs that you want to monitor.  


Click Finish to begin monitoring your cloud infrastructure on the Cloud Summary page.


Benefits and features

When managing cloud instances as nodes, SAM provides additional options to further manage cloud instances/VMs, applications, and operating systems:

Note: Managed nodes consume VMAN-licensed sockets.

  • Poll specific OS metrics beyond basic AWS and Azure metrics including cloud instance memory (RAM) and additional metrics using SAM application monitors.
  • Use SAM application monitors and templates to poll applications deployed in the cloud.
  • Develop and deploy custom script monitors for PowerShell, Nagios, Linux/Unix, and Windows.
  • Use Orion features to manage alerts, reports, and resources.

Monitoring cloud metrics

Monitor real-time and historical data for your cloud environment:

  • Monitor global performance and cloud metrics on the Cloud Summary page..
  • Drill-down into instance/VM details pages for system information, performance metrics, and active alerts.
  • Review attached volume health and general data for the environment.
  • Create and maintain alerts to track issues and events in your environment.

To further enhance monitoring for additional metrics, manage cloud instances/VMs as nodes. The applications can be monitored using:

  • WMI and SNMP: This option requires the use of a VPN that connects to an AWS or Azure virtual private cloud (VPC).
  • Orion agents: This option can be used with or without a VPN.

Troubleshooting cloud metrics with PerfStack

Performance Analysis Dashboards, or PerfStack, provide a holistic way to view environment performance issues by correlating historical performance data from Orion-managed applications. Create consolidated views of charts and graphs to collect and compare cloud metrics alongside metrics, data, and logs for all managed nodes in the Orion Platform.

This means you can turn root cause analysis meetings into a collaborative effort, by bringing historical application, server, virtualization, and storage performance data into one time-boxed view. The experts on your team can quickly identify what other performance data needs to be dragged to the PerfStack dashboard, and collaborate with each other by zeroing on the root cause by changing the timeline and objects as the story of the problem comes into focus.

  • Add metrics for every monitored and managed node in the Orion Web Console
  • Review metrics gathered from multiple Orion Platform products into a consolidated view
  • Merge metrics into the same charts and graphs to see gaps and spikes
  • Walk back and forward through dates and times to track data trends
  • Determine when performance starts to ebb and flow across resources and applications
