WebinarUpcoming Webinar: Know What’s Changed – with NEW Server Configuration Monitor

Change management in IT is critical. But, even with a good change management process, changes are too often not correctly tracked, if at all. The configuration of your servers and applications is a key factor in their performance, availability, and security. Many incidents can be tracked back to an authorized (and sometimes unauthorized) configuration change, whether to a system file, configuration file, or Windows® Registry entry. Join SolarWinds VP of product management Brandon Shopp to discover how the new SolarWinds® Server Configuration Monitor is designed to help you.

Overview

This article describes how to resolve the ORA-12514 error when using the Oracle Database template.

Environment

All SAM versions

Cause

The error is encountered when polling a component.

This is basically due to an incorrect 'Destination Point Name' field component monitor pointing to old or wrong service name.

Oracle database was moved to another cluster that is using a new 'Service Name'.

The 'Destination Point Name' field within the Oracle database template should reflect the new or current 'Service Name'.

Resolution

  1. Determine the name or SID of the database by referring to the tnsnames.ora Oracle configuration file.

    Look for something like the following:

    tnsnames.ora:
    ORA11 = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL =
    TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_
    NAME = sales.us.example.com) ))

  2. The 'Destination Point Name' should reflect the current Service Name (ex. SERVICE_
    NAME = sales.us.example.com)

  3. Click Submit on the template and the error should no longer appear within the template.
