Monitor an active/passive SQL Server Cluster

Table of contents

Updated January 11, 2019

Overview

This article provides steps on how to monitor an active/passive SQL Server cluster in SAM. This helps avoid false down conditions for monitors due to certain drives and services that do not go up on the passive node.

This is not applicable for Always On Availability Groups (AGs).

Environment

All versions of SAM

Steps

  1. Add both physical nodes by their physical IP or hostname that resolves to the physical IP address.
  2. Select your polling method.

Note: the option to select a polling method is not available if you are using agents for monitoring.

  3. Register the cluster hostname or VIP that failover to the secondary node in the case of a failover of cluster resources.
  4. Assign any SQL Server monitoring using the cluster hostname or VIP.
