Missing "Mailbox Search" Exchange management role



This article provides steps to check assignment of the "Mailbox Search" Exchange Management Role to the specified account. It also shows how to assign this role to the account.


All SAM versions


Open PowerShell session in Administrator context (Exchange Management Shell).

  • To view if the management role has been assigned to a particular service account, type:
    Get-ManagementRoleAssignment -RoleAssignee "ACCOUNT" -Role "Mailbox Search" | Where-Object {$_.RoleAssignmentDelegationType -eq "Regular"}
  • To add a service account to the "Mailbox Search" management role, type:
    New-ManagementRoleAssignment -Role "Mailbox Search" -User "ACCOUNT"



Replace ACCOUNT with desired account name
