How to Monitor an SSL Certificate and Create an Alert in SolarWinds SAM When There Are X Days Before Expiration

Overview

This article discusses how users can create an SSL Certificate Monitor and Create an Alert when there are X days remaining.

Environment

  • SAM 6.0+

Steps

How to Monitor an SSL certificate:

  1. Log into the Solarwinds web console.
  2. Navigate to Settings > SAM Settings > Manage Templates.
  3. Locate the Template called 'SSL Certificate Expiration Date'.
  4. Check the box of the template and click assign to node.
  5. Select your node which is hosting the SSL Certificate you want to monitor and click Next.
  6. Provide a credential and click 'Assign Application Monitor'.

How to configure an Alert for when there are X days remaining before the SSL certificate expires

  1. Log into the Solarwinds web console.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Manage Alerts > Create new Alert.
  3. Give the Alert a Name & please adjust the other details as required and click next.
  4. Create an alert condition the same as below:

  1. Click Next & then Please continue the rest of the Alert Wizard. You will be required to provide Trigger and Reset Actions you would like this alert to perform when the above trigger condition is met. (IE. Send an Email. Execute a Script, etc.)
  2. Once you have completed the alert wizard and saved your alert please click enable. 

 

Define the Warning / Critical values the system uses to send a notification when the SSL Certificate is due to expire. 

  1. Navigate to the Application Details page of the SSL Certificate monitor.
  2. Click Edit application monitor.
  3. Expand the Component 'SSL Certificate Expiration Date Monitor'.

  1. Locate 'Statistic Threshold:'  & on the right-hand side click 'Override Template'.
  2. In this threshold provide the values when you would like the 'Application Template' to report as Warning.(When Less than 60 Days Remaining) and Critical (Less than 30 days Remaining)

  1. Click Submit at the bottom of the page to save your thresholds.

Now when the Script which runs to check the SSL certificate number of days left until the expiry returns a value of less than 60 the application template will report as a warning which will cause an Alert to be triggered and notify you that the monitor only has X amount of days remaining.
