Duplicate Service Tags for Node Polled via vCenter

This article discusses an issue some users may face when polling ESX Servers via vCenter.

Incorrect Information is being provided by the VMware API.


To resolve this issue, please follow the steps below:


  1. Using a web browser, navigate to https://vCenterIP/mob (e.g.
  2. Log in to the website. You should see a dialog box asking you for credentials.
    Enter the appropriate credentials. Use the Same ones you provided in SolarWinds SAM.
    Then you should see the Manage Object Browser (MOB) of your vCenter.
  3. Click on "Content".


  4. Then locate the “rootFolder” property and click on the value in the value area.
    For example: Click GroupD1 from the Image below.


  5. On the next page under “childEntity” property you should see the data centers:


  6. Click on the link and locate the property "hostFolder" and click the relevant host.


  7.  On the next page in the property "childEntity", you will see a list of the host domains. Please select the relevant domain. 
  8. Now you're on the page "Managed Object Type: ManagedObjectReference:HostSystem".
    You can browse all available information about your ESX Host from here. 

    For Information such as Service Tag please select "HardwareInfo" and navigate the available pages of the MOB.


    (Please note steps vary from device to device or version of vCenter which is running. Please consult VMware for any queries regarding the VMware API)
